Should we let DD8 dress as Harley Quinn for Hallowe'en?

She's not especially into the whole Batman thing, but is quite taken with the idea of Harley Quinn as, I guess, she seems to an eight-year-old to be a strong female character.
I've just done a bit of Googling to find out more about her and she is a complex character, most of her complexities will go over DD's head, however.
My main dilemma is that despite backstory, is HQ too "grown up" a figure for DD?
Hallowe'en is a huge thing in our village, with most of the kids taking to the streets and at least half the households sporting pumpkins and dishing out sweets.
I see from my googling that HQ doesn't always have to wear shortie-shorts, so DD can wear a cape and a bodysuit. It's just the make-up on an eight-year-old that's bothering me - but then it's Hallowe'en and they'll all have some sort of make-up on.
Errrr...opinions? Thanks!

The character is very complex and recent incarnations have a trashy image. However, she started out in The Animated Series, aimed at kids, and is funny, tough and very intelligent. Her harlequin outfit and persona from this era would be fine for an 8yo! I've seen mini-Harleys about this age in the classic outfit at comic con and it was cute.
The current SS version is too much for an 8 year old; a lot darker in terms of character and image.

Well I really wouldn't worry about a bit of face painting on an 8 year old. It's for Halloween, it's not going to be her "this is how I express myself" look. Hopefully Grin!

Any of the DC comics/Marvel characters will tend to have complex backgrounds, it's part of the attraction but as you say most of it will go over her head. Lots of children start to get into them at that age. I honestly wouldn't have any concerns about this as a costume.

As long as it's not the tarty version, it's fine.

I don't see a problem with it. She also features in the recent dc superhero girls film and books which is aimed at children. My dd (8) really likes it, it's a long the same lines as monster high, ever after high and my little pony equestria girls.

They have costumes that look like the doll, which aren't thrashy at all. She could easily recreate this herself

I remember a few years ago a parent dressing her 2 DD's up as the Peru Two Grin. I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as the outfit is not tarty.

My 4 year old niece has the costume from this photo. It's from an online animated series DC Superhero Girls. Harley Quinn isn't even a villain in that show she is just a bit of a spirited prankster. Either that version or original animated series totally fine for an 8yo. Margot Robbie version not so much!

This is the Lego summary of her character Grin
She's fictional, and loveable naughty Harley the class clown is just as real as the dark version.

My dd9 is being Harley this year & she has the suicide squad costume. I don’t really see the complex character a problem, it will go over most children’s heads.

DD last year & DS who was just 2 went as Chucky & Tiffany the bride of chucky.

Right, thanks all.
DD will probably opt for a bodysuit anyway as it's late October!
I'll talk to her about the older iterations and sort something along those lines.
