To think a single man travelling to Thailand regularly is up to no good

My uncle (who I am not particularly close to) travels to Thailand alone several times a year. He is in his mid 50s and has lived with my grandad since divorcing his wife around 20 years ago.
It's suddenly occurred to me that he's probably up to no good :/
AIBU?

TheNaze73 Sat 23-Sep-17 16:36:33

Yes YABU.

Bit of a sweeping generalisation

Crispsheets Sat 23-Sep-17 16:37:24

Is he called Paul Raven?

Pengggwn Sat 23-Sep-17 16:38:04

I would harbour suspicions too, sadly.

19lottie82 Sat 23-Sep-17 16:38:13

Wow! YABU!
I used to go to Thailand once or twice a year when I was younger (and single), was I "up to no good"?

Ribrabrob Sat 23-Sep-17 16:38:16

What a strange thing to think.

brasty Sat 23-Sep-17 16:38:22

Unless he has a passion for Thailand temples, with lots of books and talks about them a lot, then yes he will be.

Sodaface Sat 23-Sep-17 16:38:32

I agree, I knew someone similar. He's been locked up thank god.

PinkHeart5913 Sat 23-Sep-17 16:39:41

Is it possible you are just very small minded?

Maybe he just loves the country? Either way surely you have better things to think about than an uncle you aren't even close too

Littlecaf Sat 23-Sep-17 16:39:49

A bit presumptious but YANBU. My FIL apparently did this on a semi regular basis. It's one of the many many reasons why DP & DBILs went NC with him. Makes my skin crawl (we never met thank goodness).

GremlinGreen Sat 23-Sep-17 16:41:51

He almost certainly has a Thai girlfriend out there. Doesn't necessarily mean he's 'up to no good' in the sense you may be thinking of, he could have a girlfriend who's similar age. Have you tried asking him if he's met someone out there?

yorkshapudding Sat 23-Sep-17 16:41:55

I love Thailand. Gorgeous country, wonderful people, amazing food. I can easily see why someone who had the means to do so would travel there regularly without being "up to no good". I wouldn't make assumptions unless you have other reasons to be suspicious about him.

I also got such an uncle. But mine lives on a farm with my grandma (they each have their own "flat"). I have been thinking the same about him.

brasty Sat 23-Sep-17 16:43:08

He won't have a Thai girlfriend. He may very well regularly visit the same prostituted Thai woman or girl, every time he goes out.

PolkaDotty7 Sat 23-Sep-17 16:43:14

YANBU and I'd also think the same if it was Brazil. Only because I'd been told by my Brazilian friends the airport is full of young girls waiting for old men to arrive and then go off together.

DorisDangleberry Sat 23-Sep-17 16:44:19

If my niece was gossiping about me on an open internet forum I would say that she was up to no good

Brittbugs80 Sat 23-Sep-17 16:45:20

If you are not that close, why do you care?

Butterymuffin Sat 23-Sep-17 16:45:53

I'm afraid I'd be thinking what you're thinking.

FrustratedTeddyLamp Sat 23-Sep-17 16:46:10

What a shit thing to think about a family member

Pengggwn Sat 23-Sep-17 16:46:44

FrustratedTeddyLamp

Every creep is someone's family member. Well, virtually.

FrustratedTeddyLamp Sat 23-Sep-17 16:48:34

Yes but without any evidence to consider a main reason a family member travels is sex tourism is shocking

ConciseandNice Sat 23-Sep-17 16:49:29

I've travelled through there often on business to China and all I can say without saying anything really upsetting and sad is YANBU. It's a worry.

Pengggwn Sat 23-Sep-17 16:49:50

FrustratedTeddyLamp

Really? I have several relatives I wouldn't be shocked to learn would visit prostitutes. It's hardly uncommon.

Aquamarine1029 Sat 23-Sep-17 16:51:15

I would definitely think he's going there for far more than the beautiful scenery.

brasty Sat 23-Sep-17 16:51:59

I don't know any family members who use prostituted women, but there are a few I would not be surprised about.
Sex tourism is very big business. Lots of men do travel to Thailand for this.
