AIBU?

To think a single man travelling to Thailand regularly is up to no good

My uncle (who I am not particularly close to) travels to Thailand alone several times a year. He is in his mid 50s and has lived with my grandad since divorcing his wife around 20 years ago.
It's suddenly occurred to me that he's probably up to no good :/
AIBU?

Yes YABU.

Bit of a sweeping generalisation

Crispsheets · 23/09/2017 16:37

Is he called Paul Raven?

Wow! YABU!
I used to go to Thailand once or twice a year when I was younger (and single), was I "up to no good"?

Ribrabrob · 23/09/2017 16:38

What a strange thing to think.

brasty · 23/09/2017 16:38

Unless he has a passion for Thailand temples, with lots of books and talks about them a lot, then yes he will be.

Sodaface · 23/09/2017 16:38

I agree, I knew someone similar. He's been locked up thank god.

PinkHeart5913 · 23/09/2017 16:39

Is it possible you are just very small minded?

Maybe he just loves the country? Either way surely you have better things to think about than an uncle you aren't even close too

Littlecaf · 23/09/2017 16:39

A bit presumptious but YANBU. My FIL apparently did this on a semi regular basis. It's one of the many many reasons why DP & DBILs went NC with him. Makes my skin crawl (we never met thank goodness).

GremlinGreen · 23/09/2017 16:41

He almost certainly has a Thai girlfriend out there. Doesn't necessarily mean he's 'up to no good' in the sense you may be thinking of, he could have a girlfriend who's similar age. Have you tried asking him if he's met someone out there?

yorkshapudding · 23/09/2017 16:41

I love Thailand. Gorgeous country, wonderful people, amazing food. I can easily see why someone who had the means to do so would travel there regularly without being "up to no good". I wouldn't make assumptions unless you have other reasons to be suspicious about him.

Mia184 · 23/09/2017 16:42

I also got such an uncle. But mine lives on a farm with my grandma (they each have their own "flat"). I have been thinking the same about him.

brasty · 23/09/2017 16:43

He won't have a Thai girlfriend. He may very well regularly visit the same prostituted Thai woman or girl, every time he goes out.

PolkaDotty7 · 23/09/2017 16:43

YANBU and I'd also think the same if it was Brazil. Only because I'd been told by my Brazilian friends the airport is full of young girls waiting for old men to arrive and then go off together.

DorisDangleberry · 23/09/2017 16:44

If my niece was gossiping about me on an open internet forum I would say that she was up to no good

Brittbugs80 · 23/09/2017 16:45

If you are not that close, why do you care?

Butterymuffin · 23/09/2017 16:45

I'm afraid I'd be thinking what you're thinking.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 23/09/2017 16:46

What a shit thing to think about a family member

Yes but without any evidence to consider a main reason a family member travels is sex tourism is shocking

ConciseandNice · 23/09/2017 16:49

I've travelled through there often on business to China and all I can say without saying anything really upsetting and sad is YANBU. It's a worry.

I would definitely think he's going there for far more than the beautiful scenery.

brasty · 23/09/2017 16:51

I don't know any family members who use prostituted women, but there are a few I would not be surprised about.
Sex tourism is very big business. Lots of men do travel to Thailand for this.

FineOldCriminals · 23/09/2017 16:54

Is he into MMA or Thai boxing?
