To not accept this?

We have been waiting seven weeks to have a new hearth fitted. It took ages because the marble had to be custom cut. The company arrived today and I left the two men to get on with it. When they called me in to view the finished product the front and back pieces were completely different colours. The front piece was very similar to the sample (as seen in the photo) but the back was a totally different colour.

I had a long chat with their boss who assured me that the two pieces were cut from the same slab of marble and that colour variations were to be expected but I think this goes way beyond an acceptable colour variation.

The men have taken it away and I'm waiting to hear back from the boss and stonemason.

It is so annoying, I have a huge hole in my wall and until the hearth is fitted and everything made good I cannot get my new stove fitted. And winter is coming.

To not accept this?

I wouldn't have been happy with that either. Yes you expect colour variations, but that's massive.

WineIsTheAnswer · 22/09/2017 13:07

I wouldn't accept it. Those two are completely different colours, no way are they from the same bit of marble. Even if they were it doesn't make such an extreme colour and pattern variation acceptable.

Winteriscomingneedmorewood · 22/09/2017 13:09

Someone is telling you porkies. .

crimsonlake · 22/09/2017 13:32

Once the stove is fitted will it be noticeable ?

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 22/09/2017 13:45

Ones white and the others a sort of beige

No way are they from the same piece. You accept variations...but that's not right

Hope it gets sorted asap

FizzyGreenWater · 22/09/2017 14:08

That does not look like the same piece of marble.

teaandtoast · 22/09/2017 14:09

A colour variation? 😂

WeAreEternal · 22/09/2017 14:12

That's definitely not from the same piece of marble.
Well done for speaking up and refusing to accept that shoddy work.

peachgreen · 22/09/2017 15:22

I don't even get why it needs to be two pieces!

Aquamarine1029 · 22/09/2017 16:06

Cut from the same slab?! Not a chance! He must have been hoping that you're a fucking idiot.

Creampastry · 22/09/2017 16:10

They have fucked up! No way is that the same!

BenLui · 22/09/2017 16:12

I wouldn’t have accepted that either.

Allabitmuchisntit · 22/09/2017 16:19

Why has it not all been cut as one piece? Why a seperate back piece?
But yeah, no way is that the same bit of marble. Ugh I hate getting tradesmen in because of faff like this.

gorygloria · 22/09/2017 16:21

My dad worked with marble his whole life (admittedly, carrera) and he says those are not from the same slab.

Silverthorn · 22/09/2017 16:24

I would expect one piece, no joins.

Allthebestnamesareused · 22/09/2017 16:28

Surely they could template such a small area so it was all one slab. It looks like 2 other people's off cuts!

glitterlips1 · 22/09/2017 16:34

Wouldn't accept this no. Looks like different pieces of marble and I wouldn't be happy with the join either.

MassDebate · 22/09/2017 16:34

They are clearly different materials! The whole hearth should be one piece of stone though, any stonemasons would be able to template and cut that easily. They are clearly trying to con you with two separate pieces. Don't accept it!

MagicMoneyTree · 22/09/2017 16:36

No fucking way are they from the same piece. He must think you're fucking stupid. Do make sure you put him straight on that! And query why there are two separate pieces anyway. If it's being custom cut, why can't it be one piece? Hope you get it sorted soon.

RainbowPastel · 22/09/2017 16:37

They are talking bollocks there is no way that is from the same piece.

yamadori · 22/09/2017 16:45

If they were supposed to be custom-cutting it, then they should have managed to cut the whole thing in a single shaped piece.

eddielizzard · 22/09/2017 16:45

it should be one piece (misses the point)

They are taking the piss, probably thinking little woman would accept it.

If it was cut to order why wasn't it all cut as one piece? marble comes in bigger pieces than the front hearth bit.

5rivers7hills · 22/09/2017 16:46

Here is no way that is from the same slab!!!!

Why isn't it all one piece anyway?

gladisgood · 22/09/2017 17:07

erm nope. There is no way on earth that is from the same piece!

It looks shit.

I wouldn't pay for that.
