AIBU?

To be frustrated with parents' questions about jobs?

A few years ago I went through a very rough patch and ended up having to have some time off work. During this time I decided to go to uni to retrain in something I really loved, I had a career already before my break but had never gone to uni which my parents were always disappointed about.

Fast forward to this year and I have finally got my degree. I am extremely pleased to have passed it but to be honest the chances of me actually using the degree are slim to none given that the job opportunities in that field in this area of the country are very scarce.

Now that I am about to graduate this is prompting lots of questions from my parents about what job I'm going to do now and when I'm going to get a 'decent' job. I'm starting to feel under pressure to get anything else asap just so they will stop asking! I love them to death but it is getting awkward having this conversation.

The thing is, I like the job I have now. It isn't very well paid but I'm good at it, I like my co workers , I have a short commute, and I have more freedom than I would with other kinds of job. I travel a lot to visit family members on the other side of the country so having this freedom is important to me and I don't think I would prefer to have more money instead.

I don't think my parents will understand this though. I realise I am not a child and can do what I like with my life but it is getting to the point where every time I call them I'm getting the same questions and I'm getting tired of having to defend myself all the time. Aibu to be frustrated?

I think they're just trying to show an interest. I ll be flamed but I don't really understand why it was done unless it would develop your career

Are you living with your parents? Did they support you through Uni (financial and otherwise)?
If he's to my questions, I think they have a point.

Should read ... if it's yes to my questions...

I don't really understand. Why weren't you just honest the first time and tell them you don't want another job, you wish the one you have and that the degree was not for job prospects but simply because you wanted to.

As you said, you're not a child, so be honest with them.

I don't think it was outlandish of them to think that you were planning to change your job, using your degree. So it's a fair question.
Did they fund you at all?

No and no Moon, I have lived independently for over a decade and got student loans to fund my degree.

I did intent to try and change careers when I started the course but that was more of a by product, I mainly wanted to improve my confidence and gain qualifications in something I was really interested in. It only transpired during the course that it would only really be possible to get a job in that field if I moved away from the area and I don't want to do that.

I think it's time for you to be very clear and very direct. You are happy with what you're doing, and you are not going to talk about other jobs anymore. If you find something else, you will let them know.
