I've hurt my baby!

I've just accidentally hurt my poor DD whose 14 months

She was stood up and I was trying to take her babygrow off, she wasn't too happy. I was stupid and carried on and she ended up falling flat on her face on the wooden floor!

Her mouth filled with blood! It was horrific!! I comforted her tried to clean as much of the blood with a wipe. She stopped crying quickly but I don't feel any better.

She's just fallen asleep in my arms (nap time anyway). I think she's bitten her tongue and lip. I'm devestated and feel like the worst mother in the world. The amount of blood has scared me and now I'm terrified to put her in her cot.

Please tell me she's fine, I feel like the worst mother in the world. It was an accident but my fault.

Tongues bleed like bitches. My sister fell and bit right through her tongue and it healed just fine all by herself. Have a cup of tea and forgive yourself.

Don't panic, mouth injuries always produce what looks like loads of blood, but they heal really quickly. If she stopped crying quickly I'm sure she's fine and she'll have completely forgotten about it after her sleep.

You didn't intend to hurt her and accidents do happen. Please give yourself a break and remember you only feel terrible because you love her.

It was an accident. They happen. I remember nicking DS1 finger when cutting his nails. I felt awful. The fact you feel so bad shows how much you care.

I nipped my dd's skin and made it bleed when I was cutting her finger nails once , I felt like the worst mother in the world!

Mouth injuries look like they bleed loads but in reality it partly saliva.

I once tried to catch my toddler as she tottered forward and almost fell, ended up pushing her in the back of the head on to the floor on her face instead. She once rolled off the sofa on to the floor as a baby. I fell down the stairs holding her as a toddler. I once smacked her head into a door frame carrying her through the door.
She is fine, I still feel guilt 5 or 6 years on. The only one she remembers is the fall down the stairs. She wasn't hurt - I managed to curl round her but I was battered.

You aren't a bad mum, lo isn't hurt, you will likely do something similar again, yes you will always feel a bit guilty!

DD1 fell down the stairs when I was about 30 cm away from her. I felt terrible and when I checked her over and she had stopped crying I burst into tears and she said 'are you OK mummy?'.

It probably looked bad OP but it was an accident and your dd will still love you

Completely normal to feel that guilty but don't be so hard in yourself. Accidents happen and she stopped crying quickly so she's ok. She would let you know if she wasn't. Mouth injuries always seem 10 times worse because of saliva. I'm sure she's fine op xx

When my Dd was that age I walked to the other side of the room to open a cabinet and didn't realise she had been hot in her heels right behind me and I elbowed her in the face as I opened cabinet. Had no idea she was right behind me. Her wee face of stricken horror. I cried then pulled myself together.

Don't feel bad. I once accidentally shut the door on my DD's toe and the nail came off. I was so upset I eventually had a therapy session to get over it!

Ok first thing you have not hurt your baby she was hurt when she fell. These things happen all the time my ds2 is only 12 months and had bashed his face 3 times because he seems to be part monkey the older ds has not been bruise free in at least 4 years.

I had clipped the end of a finger while doing her nails by 6m. Also slipped at a swimming pool while i was holding her and she face planted the tiles, putting a tooth through a lip.

Both before 12m.. there were many more...

I'd say you're probably doing better than most :)

Oh bless you. When one of my twins was smaller he learned to get to sitting before he could sit up so he was falling on his face all the time. One time he cried much louder and when I picked him up there was literally blood running from his mouth - scared me to death! Source was a tiny cut to his lip from a tooth but it bled like crazy. These things happen, the fact you care shows you're not a bad mum! X

Don't worry. It's a horrible feeling but these accidents really do happen to everyone! I once dropped my iPad on DS2's big toe. He was about 18months at the time. His toe nail immediately went black and filled with blood. He was in agony. Toe wasn't broken but the nail died and a couple of weeks later I watched in horror as he ripped it off because it was annoying him! Still makes me feel dreadfully guilty 6 years later.

Also, I had both twins on the sofa, I turned for five seconds to stop one leaping off and the other crawled right off the front, flipped in the air, landed on his forehead and his body sort of bent - I was convinced he had broken his back or something. He cried for two minutes, I cried for around two hours!

Oh, and the first time that twin ever rolled was off our bed when my husband turned his back - he just turned round to find him on the floor. Never seen my husband cry like that.

It's completely normal to feel like this but it will happen!

Been there OP, DD tripped on some steps and the amount of blood haunted me for weeks.

Totally blamed myself too, which was ridiculous in hindsight!

A child tripped over in front of me the other day (not even my child!) and I instinctively but my hand out to catch him. I ended up catching him by the front of his neck.
His mum saw the whole thing and obviously knew it wasn't on purpose, but he tripped with quite some force and started crying and I felt awful

Aw bless you. She will be absolutely fine, don't worry! It was an accident. You didn't hurt her on purpose. I have a list as long as my arm of accidents my 2 and a half year old has had. Latest being he fell face first and burst his nose open when I was chasing him around the house. He's fell down a flight of 15 concrete stairs when he was 1 with nothing but a bump on the head to show for it, I was definitely more traumatised than he was! These things happen and often look worse than they actually were. The bonus also that she will not remember it!
