AIBU?

To not get this not washing your hair thing?!

Recent trip to the hairdresser resulted in me getting told off (gently) for washing my hair every day. Post pregnancy my hair is a lot thinner and prone to breaking, and in the last few months I’ve had the nastiest greasy roots. I mean proper crispy hair, it’s grim!

I’ve always washed my hair daily since childhood, but now I’m told I shouldn’t.

Problem is by the end of the day I haven’t washed I look a mess! My fringe looks like a oil slick, it is horrible.

Do I go back to daily washing and just go bald? Or am I missing a trick that everyone else knows and I don’t?

Dry shampoo is your friend!

Washing your hair every day will make your hair become grieser quicker as you have product build up.

I'd recommend the I love Juicy shampoo from Lush. It really cuts through all the product build up and stops my roots becoming greasier too quickly.

I think some B vitamins can help (from what I randomly seem to remember from somewhere).

I wash mine everyday and it is in fantastic condition. I go to the gym and horse ride so if I didn't it would look frightful! My hairdresser washes his hair daily too and said it isn't a problem. I do use a weekly intensive conditioner and oil on the ends.

Its greasy because you wash it too much. I know it's probably unpleasant but if you can break that cycle it'll be much better. I rarely wash my hair Blush I am mixed race though and it doesn't get greasy at all. Once a week is fine for my hair and it doesn't stink or go crispy. It I leave it longer it just gets softer but I don't want to go full hobo.

It may not work for every type of hair, but my hair massively improved with shampooing less and less (once max twice a week) and using no-poo shampoo (google it). Surprisingly non-greasy and non-smelly.

I used to wash my hair every day and it was really noticeable if I didn't - ended up really greasy quickly.

I had to stay in hospital for a few months a couple of years back and it was very difficult to wash my hair, only managing about once a week if I was lucky. To start with it felt horrible, but after a short while it was honestly so much healthier, thicker and shinier with no grease at all! Now I wash it every 3-4 ish days and always get complimented on my hair, it never looks greasy now.
If you can manage to hold out to start with, maybe every second day to begin with and using dry shampoo in between as a pp said then I think you will notice a difference.

Dry shampoo makes my hair mank. I've tried a million different ones.
I wash mine everyday but I'm not having issues with it thinning. Can you use a shampoo for thinning hair to help it?

How post pregnancy are you?

It takes up to six months for your hormones to get your body back to pre-pregnancy (it takes up to a year in total).

Did you have a decent cut?

Are you taking supplements? The Skin-hair-nails ones do make a difference. Also look at changing your shampoo/conditioner routine.

@Llamacorn how long did it take for it to start up feel better? I've tried it before but give up after a week as it's so gross.

Ive tried not washing my hair many times. It becomes unbearably itchy and looks shit. I can make it get to every other day, but it looks and feels best if i wash it daily, its just the type of hair ive got.

Another for dry shampoo, I wash mine twice a week....sometimes just once if I'm being particularly lazy. I use dry shampoo spray around the roots for when it looks a bit shiny.

I used to do every day but when I switched to every other day (dry shampoo in between), it did definitely get less greasy. I could now go to a third day occasionally if I haven't exercised or been caught in rain etc. But my general rule is still to aim for every other day as I prefer it. Very glad I made the switch as it saves me at least 15 minutes for each day I don't wash it.

Oh and I no longer need the dry shampoo, I should've said - I can do every other day with no dry shampoo and could get to a third day sometimes still with nothing or sometimes with dry shampoo. It just gradually gets better.

I started just rinsing my hair every time in the shower instead if washing properly with shampoo every day.
deep conditioning once a month.
def less breakage and frizz and no nasty unwashed feel&smell.

only used dry shampoo once.
it's such a faff, much easier to just rinse the hair...

Another vote for no-poo shampoo. If your hair is itchy if you don't wash daily check if your conditioner has ingredients starting with M. I realised they made my head itchy. Apparently that's fairly common according to google.

I wanted to grow mine long and cut down on washing, styling and therefore breaking. I switched from daily to every-other-day. About three years ago.

Frankly I am not a fan. The day-old hair is impossible to style or brush due to the grease and all I can do is sling it up in a bun and keep my hood up. Dry shampoo doesn't seem to do anything at all but make it stiff and strange.

After all this time I'd have thought it would have changed in some way, but nothing. Fresh hair or shit hair. I'm going back to work soon and I'll have to go back to daily washing; the day-old hair is not fit for public.

These things work for some and not others. My hair is too fine, I think, to not get greasy on the second day.

I think the more you wash it the more you need to wash it, but maybe it depends on the hair. I have long thick hair and wash it around every five days, it looks fine. When I was younger I washed it once a week.

I don't like dry shampoo.

It is true that the more you wash it the more you need to wash it, but mine falls awkwardly and flicks bizarrely. It isn't just the not washing but the styling process.

Barbie do you use GHDs/hair straightners - that could be causing the crispy ends? My hair has improved now I only use them on my fringe, at least in terms of crispiness but it doesn't make a difference for hair falling out. It is normal for your hair to thin out after pregnancy.

I wash mine every day if I have a meeting or am in an office, but on days when I am mostly working from home and only going out to go to the shop, or out locally, I don't wash it at all. Same with weekends - only wash it if I'm going out somewhere nice. I like it freshly-washed best but I know it's better for it to leave it sometimes, so I try to do this whenever I can. Nobody has pointed and laughed at me in the street for having greasy hair, even if sometimes I feel that they probably should. (The reality is nobody notices at all.)

I don't like the idea of dry shampoo - like putting talc into your hair!

My hair is very fine and blonde so shows up grease. I used to wash daily as I felt I had to. I've now transitioned to every 2-3 days and it's made a huge difference to its condition. It adjusted very quickly.

I use arrowroot powder in between washes instead of dry shampoo as I don't like the excessive packaging waste. Works just as well.

I cycle and work out a lot, but braiding my hair keeps it neat and there's no smell from the sweat (I've had DH check!).
