£50 advent calendar for tweens

Ijustwantaquietlife · 14/09/2017 14:37

I know I'm not the target market, but my neice would apparently like a £50 advent calendar. I wouldn't mind the high price point but it looks like awful value, some confetti and cookie cutters are the type of gifts and there are only 12 holes.

It just seems such blatant rip off by a money hungry YouTuber who has alot of young fans. I can barely see £20 of value in it!

Important info
The Lifestyle Advent Calendar (contains bauble, confetti, purse, candle 130g, cookie cutter x 2, jotter pad, key ring, pen, room spray 30ml, stickers and votive)

It's because of the name, not about what's in it. You can get a £50 beauty advent calendar from another brand with 24 days and better quality products. I'm actually shocked by how much she's branded this at! Her stuff is normally a bit over price point but that's ridiculous Shock

I look forward to seeing how much it's selling for in the 'January' sale!

I agree it seems bonkers, but....her candles sell for £10, jotter £10, purse £7, bauble £8 etc etc etc.
The £50 for 12 items thing doesn't seem so bad in that context.
Having read the comments on the boots site I won't be buying one though!

I saw that the other day, remember thinking it was mental and didn't even twig it was only 12 days - what a rip off!

Her range is 3 for 2 in boots so I bought 2 candles and a mug to keep as little gifts for Christmas. When they came the candles are nice but the mug is TINY!

Twistmeandturnme apart from the candles it isn't the same stuff in the advent calendar it's much smaller versions. The baubal is not £8, it's a little wodden flat thing that looks worth 50p to £1. There's someone on YouTube opening them and most of them are cheap cracker type gifts. A best it's pound shop stuff, the rest looks like freebie junk mail stuff.

The zoella notepad for £14 is just as crazy as well.

Jeez what a rip off! You're not getting them it are you? They'd be better off being given £50 and having a spree round boots.

I just knew this was going to be Zoella. What a rip-off!
Makes my usual Yankee candle one seem positively cheap now.

I knew this would be xoella. I saw it the other day and thought she's excelled herself at overpricing this time.

She's definitely getting greedier imo. Glad mine isn't into Zoella anymore. I sigh every time one of my dc mentions youtuber 'merch'.

I thought Zoella made Youtube videos (I've only heard of her in passing). Does she make candles and advent calendars now? For 50 quid!!? Confused

mission she has her own brand of toiletries, perfume etc aimed at teens. Some of its ok and some is overpriced crap. And the money just keeps on rolling in...

Yes I saw a clip of that one being opened on youtube and thought it looked awful value.
Try pushing another one instead. Mrs Brimbles is a lovely stationary one for about £30 ( sooooo much better than smiggle)

Don't encourage her marketing team by buying it OP.

Take a stand.

I've no intention of buying it, even if it went half price its awful value.

But how to not buy something that she wants but instead buy something I approve of and give a lesson on not being taken for a fool without being a mean bitch? 🤔🤔

It's not an advent calendar. The 12 days of Christmas are the twelve days after Christmas. Buy it for her as a Christmas gift if she really wants it?

Sometimes I don't know how YTers can live with themselves for pushing ludicrously expensive, poor-value junk to kids who have no/limited funds, but who are desperate to keep up their loyalties. It makes me sad. Sad

Agree it looks crap but I'm a 41 year old woman and I can see why a teen who loves Zoella would want it as a gift. But yeah, it's insanely overpriced. A lot of 'gift' advent calendars for adults are also overpriced. Some of them are £100s for gifts that are essentially just tiny miniature beauty products that you could get free as samples when you spend money on the counters, and a proportion of which will be wrong for the recipient's skin/colouring anyway. There are some good ones but most of them are just posh packaging and a load of cheap samples.

Is £50 what you'd usually spend on her? If so, I don't suppose it really matters if the gift seems like a rip-off to us if it's what your niece really, really wants. The end result to you is the same really; you'll be £50 lighter whether you buy her this or whether you buy her something else and at least you know she'll be pleased with it.

But I can see why you're reluctant, I would be too - it's just the principle of the thing, isn't it? Maybe you could gently point out some other desirable things she could have for the same money and see what she says.

Zoella is in Superdrug on 3 4 2 at the moment. Could you make a hamper up, with lots of bits, co ordinating flannel, washmit, small towel etc? I know it's not the same as an advent calendar, but £50 is a disgrace!
