Dd 14, back to school and new rule females pupils are not to pull up tights in front of male teachers

Dd 14 had her first assembly of the year this morning, and head mistress / principle has a list of new rules, one including female students are banned from pulling up/ adjusting their 60 denier tights in front of male teachers as she feels this is inappropriate and it must be done in private in bathrooms. Surely this is crazy?

Is she saying girls are wrong to do this? If I were a male teacher I would be offended.

Why would you pull your tights up in front of anyone? Eh?

Also it's so obvious surely it doesn't need to be a rule as such. Hmm

What? I'd be livid if this was announced in assembly - are the boys being given instructions not to adjust their clothes too??

I would pull a Nora Batty up to my knees, I wouldn't pull a saggy crotch up in public.

Well yes and no. One should always adjust tights in private. It is wrong to do it infribt if both names and females alike.

I'm 41 and never done pulling up my bloody tights. Would she prefer they fall down?

Why only in front of male teachers?

I went to an all girls school. We pulled them up in front of anyone. Literally so uncomfortable otherwise!

I agree with her that pulling up tights is something to be done in private spaces. As should all adjustment of underwear by all sexes.

So rule is fair enough, but it is odd that she singled out doing it in front of male teachers.

Why would you pull your tights up in front of anyone?

So they don't fall down.

Why would you be offended if you were a male teacher? Surely it's not a male teachers business if a pupil needs to pull up her tights on her way around the school, I hate wearing tights as they often fall down. My interpretation of this rule is that she's insinuating this is a provocative act, and imo it's totally inappropriate for a male teacher to be distracted by underage girls, adjusting their uniform if needed.

If they are worried the male teachers may be "tempted" perhaps they need to hire different teachers! Why else would gender matter? Very odd.

Good grief

Thank heavens someone is actively looking out for the adult men of this world who need assistance to navigate the stresses of life involving teenage girls wearing their own clothes. What a relief.

It sounds like she is accusing male staff of improper thoughts around children, that's why I would be offended if I was a male teacher at that school.

Rule would be fair enough if it was to not adjust underwear and tights in public. It's the female student/male teacher thing that is totally wrong. I would write in and complain, the rule should be changed so as not to be sexist. It insults teenage girls and male teachers simultaneously.

I would suggest there have been incidents where it wasn't just a pull to get rid of wrinkles. Some male teachers may have been placed in very difficult situations.

The male teachers aren't tempted they are worried for their jobs.

Is she joking...?

God I wouldn't even notice I was doing it when I was at school! And what if I they have cheap tights like a lot of teenage girls do? They'll be in the bloody bathrooms every five minutes!

If I were your daughter I would seriously ask to go to the loo every five minutes to prove a point...

Can the male teachers not just,, you know, avert their eyes?

Report
Wolfiefan · 29/08/2017 21:12

Depends. If they are hitching up skirts to pull tights up round their crotches then they should be doing that in private. Why they have to specify it isn't appropriate in front of only male members of staff is bonkers. Either do it in private or don't. Weird to make a whole school rule too!! Is tights hitching a regional problem?!

Report
gillybeanz · 29/08/2017 21:13

why would they do this anyway?
Surely parents teach their children to adjust their underwear in private.
I'd say it about boys if they wore tights too.
It's a shame they have to make it a rule instead of being confident parents would socialise their children.

Damn if I went to a school like that every single girl would spend every single second adjusting their tights in the bathroom.

Report
RB68 · 29/08/2017 21:14

It should be done privately full stop - male teachers should be nothing to do with it. If they fit you they won't fall down that much surely. Ridiculous to make a rule as such - children doing it should just be directed to the loos when caught doing it it then becomes habit

Pulling tights up at the knees is fairly standard practice with every pair I've ever owned.

Provided girls aren't hoiking their skirts to their hips and adjusting their gussets it's hardly something that requires privacy.

I'd seek clarification from the head mistress but if what your DD is saying is accurate I'd be livid since the implication is that girls shouldn't be "flaunting" themselves in front of men.

Time to get rid of skirts and tights as school uniform. Let them all just wear jeans.
