AIBU?

to be really upset by people's lack of help

We've just discovered, at 9pm at night, that we can't use our bathroom. We have a leak and water is pissing down into the kitchen (through the electrics even) and we basically have nowhere to go

We've asked my stepsister, my friends and DH's family are in Italy. DM is actually staying with us because her house is having work done so that isn't an option

everyone we've asked (with enough, and no DC's either) has made some excuse, including my stepsister who turned one of us away because she is having a party tomorrow

I just can't cope with this, its been one thing after another recently and nobody will help. AIBU to expect people to help in a situation such as this? We never ask for anything

Will your house insurance put you in a hotel?

Is it so bad you need to leave the house? We've had leaks before and just got them fixed as soon as possible. How leaky is the leak?

Sorry that nobody has offered to have you Flowers

From rain or from a pipe?

We've pulled up the bath panel and the floor is rotten, I think its been going on a while, DH noticed a ring of damp around light switch in the kitchen

Basically all the water from the toilet, sink and bath is backing up and leaking somewhere. So we can't use any facilities

We're looking into hotels now but we're in the middle of ruralish yorkshire so the nearest cheap travelodge is at least an hours drive

You need to find the stop cock thingy.

The electrics will trip? I'm surprised they haven't

Switch off the box

Is this home owned or rented

Either way you have the right to emergency assistance

Its privately rented, landlord won't do anything until tomorrow

his solution is for us not to use the bathroom until tomorrow

I'm sorry but I think yabu to expect people to have your whole family to stay with no idea of how long for or what's happening. Just turn off the electrics, go to the toilet and then turn off the water and go to bed. Secure the leak in the morning and get the electrics checked and then you can turn them back on it's really unlikely to take more than a couple of days to sort the actual leak/electric situation I appreciate cosmetic damage may take longer but just leave one of you to 'camp it out' and take the kids to a travel lodge.

Be blunt, say we can't stay her can we stay at yours. Some people just won't lift their thoughts to offering, but would love to help

So you don't even need to sort it, the landlord will, then yes yabu just go to the toilet but don't flush the chain (Throw water down if needed) and fill up the sink to wash your hands in no biggie

One night without a bathroom?

I'd offer I suppose, but I'd be surprised at being asked!

Hope your landlord gets it sorted quickly for you.

Im surprised people have said no ifbyouve actually asked, that's pretty mean.

However, it wouldn't have occured to me to ask. Have you never been camping?! (Proper camping, not toilet blocks & entertainment'). Use a bucket & not for tipping water down the loo.

Wouldn't it be more hassle to stay elsewhere? I would just get on with it.

It is mean of them. But nobody really wants unexpected guests at the last minute even if they are family. You'll just have to manage till the morning. Not pleasant I agree. But if there's water running down the walls the damage is going to be quite serious unless you turn the water off.

noodlesoupz · 22/08/2017 23:05

Sorry I should have been more clear. We have had to turn off the electrics and cannot flush the toilet at all even with a bucket

tomorrow is the earliest it will be fixed but its not likely that it will all be sorted for at least a few days

I've had similar leaks and while its really quite stressful I don't think one more night is going to make that much of a difference especially if it's been going on for a while.
Wash/brush teeth in the kitchen and use a bucket to flush the toilet, if you can locate the stop cock then it would be an idea to turn it off overnight, it's surprising what you can do without for one night. Remember to fill the kettle if your turning off the water. I had a recurrent leak in my last property and it was a proper nightmare but it's your landlords problem to fix not yours thankfully.

Why can't you stay at dh's family's house while they're in Italy?

Report
Mrscaindingle · 22/08/2017 23:09

Can you not just trip the switch for the electrics in the kitchen or at least just one part of the house?

Report
certainlynotsusan · 22/08/2017 23:13

Cats

I read that as DH is Italian and so his family are based in a different country. Happy to be wrong though...

Report
noodlesoupz · 22/08/2017 23:15

@CatsAreAssholes sorry yes DH is from Italy so no family over here

we are in a very small house so all electrics are sort of connected, landlord told us to switch it all off

Landlady here. If the house is unliveable, they will have to house you elsewhere at their expense or make it liveable. Talk to the cab in the morning or the letting agent if they use one.

Report
gamerchick · 22/08/2017 23:25

All you need to do is turn the water off at the stop cock. Have you done this? If the electrics haven't tripped then they should be fine. Just flip thit switch for the kitchen.

Just turn the water off.
