AIBU?

To think this new wave of Gender Reveal a bit crap?

It just seems so impersonal. I think it should be a special moment between just you and your partner if you do find out. The whole popping a balloon in front of your family to screams of delight really makes me cringe. AIBU and a total spoil sport here? 😱

YANBU!

tabbycatbythesea · 21/08/2017 06:31

I'm with you in this one!

Stardust28 · 21/08/2017 06:32

The whole thing feels very attention seeking to me tbh. Just another occasion for the parent to shine the spotlight on herself.

/grumps

TidyDancer · 21/08/2017 06:33

Oh yeah it's horrible. Just another attention seeking load of shit. Very few people will be that interested other than the parents anyway.

insancerre · 21/08/2017 06:36

Yanbu
It's just so unnecessary

Tiptoethr0ughthetulips · 21/08/2017 06:36

YANBU but then again I didn't think baby showers would ever take off here but the masses seem to love them.

dingdongdigeridoo · 21/08/2017 06:37

It's a way to separate people with their cash because of FOMO. I categorise it along with xmas eve boxes, professional back to school photos and cake smashes as something that's not for me, but good for whoever is taking in cash for this shite.

DavidsGoblinKing · 21/08/2017 06:38

Tacky

LineysRun · 21/08/2017 06:38

And why can't people use the correct term, sex? Will they faint away clutching their crinolines?

The whole thing's cringe-making and wrong. And feeds the whole pink and blue bollocks (which is actually gender) in a very retrograde way.

Hapaxlegomenon · 21/08/2017 06:39

YANBU it's so cringe worthy. Americans might be able to pull it off but let's leave it to them

Gorgosparta · 21/08/2017 06:39

I think my issue with them is that they are usually thrown by people who

Had an engagment party
Have a huge birthday party every year
Had a huge wedding
Had a baby shower
A big christening
Then a bitthday party for the kids birthday that everyone has to go to

I am more than happy for people to have as many parties as they want. But when its every few months and its costs guest money all the time, it becomes annoying.

I think some people forget, most people arent that bothered about these things.

PoppyH56 · 21/08/2017 06:40

Phew!! Glad it's not just me. Friend is pregnant and is saying she wants one but I feel I may have to politely decline. This seems like the better option over standing in someone's garden/house/pub screaming and cheering as they pop a balloon with blue or pink confetti. I just thought I was getting old Grin

emilybrontescorset · 21/08/2017 06:40

I agree. I much prefer it when people keep it to themselves.

ElleyBear13 · 21/08/2017 06:44

I like them (I've never thrown one but been to friends) I think it's lovely that friends/family can join in on the excitement and can celebrate with the parents.

Foslady · 21/08/2017 06:45

Whatever happened to finding out at birth? I get that people want to pink/blue stuff though can't stand the idea myself that genders have colours attached, so really grumpy cow here but I don't like to know what I'm getting fior Christmas, and felt the same about the child I was carrying!

Bohemond · 21/08/2017 06:46

Totally naff - as is most of the showing off people do these days.

ShanghaiDiva · 21/08/2017 06:47

don't see the point - I think it is sensible to remember that outside your immediate family (parents and grandparents) nobody is really that interested.

AdultHumanFemale · 21/08/2017 06:48

I agree with Liney , SEX reveal, ffs. Gender is a social construct Grin
And no, I would not.

RadioGaGoo · 21/08/2017 06:50

I think you should definitely decline. Your grumpy attitude would only spoil it for everyone!

ArgyMargy · 21/08/2017 06:51

Americans are very prudish and probably can't bring themselves to say SEX. We are of course getting all these shitty non-events from USA.

WiganPierre · 21/08/2017 06:51

Grabby and tacky.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 21/08/2017 06:53

They are naff!

I think my issue with them is that they are usually thrown by people who

Had an engagment party
Have a huge birthday party every year
Had a huge wedding
Had a baby shower
A big christening
Then a bitthday party for the kids birthday that everyone has to go to

I am having a big wedding (lots of family), had a baby shower (surprise for me by my mum and sister) and a big christening (again, large family and DP's family are catholic).

I hope people don't think I am naff. Confused

Yanbu about making a party for it. Very tacky. I see nothing wrong with choosing to share information that you have about your baby though. Making any kind of fuss about it suggests that the parents are basically sexist because they are expecting the position of the new person's gonads to dictate their personality and tastes even before the poor little thing is born.

LineysRun · 21/08/2017 06:55

I suppose we could call them Gender Stereotype Reveals

peachgreen · 21/08/2017 06:56

It's not my cup of tea but I can't say it bothers me much. As with most pregnancy / parenting-related decisions, if they're not hurting anyone I tend to err on the side of live and let live.
