to be shocked by teenage girls clothing lately

I have my DNiece age 14 on facebook. When she likes a friend's photo, it sometimes appears on my newsfeed (and DH's newsfeed)

DNiece is a sensible girl but like most kids she has everyone at school on her facebook.

So this photo she liked appeared on our facebook newsfeeds today and my DH is shocked and disgusted.

The friend of DNiece is 14. We've met her a few times. She looks older than she is, part due to her height and her development (she's very womanly already) and part due to her clothing being adult woman rather than a 14 year old.

But in this picture, its just awful what she is wearing. She's doing pretty much a kim kardashian bathroom selfie, with a kim kardashian style swimsuit. The ones that cover only half the boob and pushes up your tits. The kind you would see on a lads mag. It's just awful awful.

I thought to myself how can her parents let her dress like that, maybe they aren't on facebook, but low and behold her mother is and has liked and commented on that photo plus others.

Looking through DNiece's other friends (none of whom seem to have private facebook pages) there are quite a few others with very revealing photos.

There's guys with joints, alcohol, knives etc.

DNiece dresses appropriately when I see her, her pictures are all normal 14 year old pictures, but I am a bit concerned about who she is friends with but I won't say...not really my place.

Is this what teenage years are like now? I'm worried about my DD's next few year now.

I know I may get flamed for commenting on what someone wears though. Name changed so no one in RL recognises us

Yabu

Adults have been "shocked" by teenagers since time began. It's not your DN's behaviour/photo anyway!

It's a teenagers job to shock adults.

AfunaMbatata Sat 19-Aug-17 17:50:12

Does her mother not understand those photos of her 14 year old daughter could end up on perv sites?! What a stupid woman.

Don't worry about your child, simply tell her that shit ain't happening .

scaryclown Sat 19-Aug-17 17:50:26

Well it's selfies..

StillDrivingMeBonkers Sat 19-Aug-17 17:50:43

Bleach your eyes and enter a convent.

StillDrivingMeBonkers Sat 19-Aug-17 17:51:53

Perv sites? Any perv would see a lot more walking down the road than a few selfies

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle Sat 19-Aug-17 17:52:14

Oh ffs.
Every generation since forever has been "shocked" by teens.

My Nans aunt was horrified because in 1947 my Nan went out without hat/glove combo.

Rainybo Sat 19-Aug-17 17:54:09

Oh I don't know, I remember wearing DMs and tiny baby doll dresses that looked like nighties when I was 14 as well as tiny tops with all these strings that tied around your navel and that was 22 years ago....

DioneTheDiabolist Sat 19-Aug-17 17:56:00

Hahaha hahaha hahaha. I see teenagers haven't changed since I was one.gringringrin Hell, my grandfather was giving out the same way about my mum and her sisters and they're in their 60s and 70s now. shock

fcek Sat 19-Aug-17 17:56:04

okay this photo I found on google is almost exactly the swimsuit the girl is wearing. obvs I can't link to the girl's photo. I know its the daily fail but its pretty much the same costume

Teenage girls have always pushed the boundaries in terms of being decency covered.
My mum always used to ask if it was a skirt or a belt I had on grin.
It's just part of growing up to have your older relatives rolling their eyes at how you are dressed.

ThymeLordIsSpartacus Sat 19-Aug-17 17:59:24

and? It's perfectly normal for teenagers to dress to shock and particularly to emulate celebs. Nothing new about it at all.

SmokedPigletGuts Sat 19-Aug-17 18:00:59

Before you know teenagers (and its almost alsways girls) are going end upnon the beach wearing thong bikinis.

Bet paedophiles will love that. But as long as we shrug it off as shock.....

JemandScout Sat 19-Aug-17 18:01:15

Yanbu. She's 14. I really hate the sexualisation of children in our society. Teenagers shocking adults is nothing new but a 14 year old child wearing such a sexually provocative outfit for everyone to 'like' is wrong. Sadly many parents don't see the issue. As is the case for this girls mother. Yuk.

TinklyLittleLaugh Sat 19-Aug-17 18:01:35

I think older generations have always been shocked by the youth. My DD recently had her 18th and I thought a lot of the girls were showing off their bodies in a way we just didn't back in the 80s. I agree it's quite grim for a young girl to be doing it though.

Mustang27 Sat 19-Aug-17 18:01:59

I agree with scaryclown!!!

I'm not keen on over sexualised at any age but meh. I was never that teen dressing to shock so I just don't get it or can really have much of a say.

If I was her mum I wouldn't want her to wear it but is it really worse than a bikini

gamerwidow Sat 19-Aug-17 18:02:50

Sexual assault and pedeophilia isn't caused by girls clothing its caused by sexual perversion.
Stop blaming girls for sexual predators behaviour.

paintingbutterflies Sat 19-Aug-17 18:03:02

I'd rather that than the scrawny topless boy in front of the mirror pose tbh

heartstornastray Sat 19-Aug-17 18:04:24

I agree teenagers have been shocking parents since time began, the difference being we now have the world wide web. We have to adapt to the times and keep our kids safe wherever possible.

WorraLiberty Sat 19-Aug-17 18:05:13

"So this photo she liked appeared on our facebook newsfeeds today and my DH is shocked and disgusted"

Why are you telling us what your DH thinks? confused

I thought you were asking if you were BU?

fcek Sat 19-Aug-17 18:06:44

I know teenagers shock, I was a teenager myself once but this girl's photos are simply going too far. She's FOURTEEN. Her facebook is public, any perv on the internet can see. Judging from the 100s of likes she has, her picture could be not just on her facebook anymore but elsewhere on the internet. Oh and she has a boyfriend. She's "in a relationship" and he looks older than her. If god forbid she gets hurt, it'll be someone else's fault. Never her parents.

Anyway I'm going now. Truly shocked by some of the 'so what' attitudes. If only I were able to show you her actual FB page.

AfunaMbatata Sat 19-Aug-17 18:06:59

Stop blaming girls for sexual predators behaviour

I blame the parents allowing photos of her dressed like that online. For me it isn't the fact she is dressed like that at all, it's that semi nude pics of her are on the net for all to see and misuse of they wish.

WinnieTheMe Sat 19-Aug-17 18:08:29

I think most teens would be very disappointed if their parents approved of their fashion choices.

I remember having screaming rows with my mother in the 1990s over the length of my skirts, and whether it was acceptable to go out wearing an oversized crochet jumper as a dress.

IllBeAtTheSpa Sat 19-Aug-17 18:08:41

Would she be wearing less if she had a bikini on? Teens shock. And anyway at what age do we teach our kids their bodies are their own to do as they please.I understand your worries about perverts etc but these people will get their kicks from any source including the beach we can't cover up all the time!
