AIBU?

"I was in Barcelona two weeks ago...it could have been me!"

"But it couldnt have been because you werent there when it happened."

WIBU to have posted that in reply on FB? According to the amount of abuse I have had, I am. But I really dont think that I am!

The person concerned (a friend of a friend I sort of know) wasnt even in that area of Barcelona, and yet has done the old "OMG I must have a guardian angel!" thing.

I would have deleted them but they got in first, which is quite annoying.

I absolutely despise people who do that so no, I do not think YABU B

I sort of agree with your sentiment. I understand people are shocked by the attack and it being somewhere you have been makes it closer to home but a lot of it is frankly drama llamas being fucking annoying so YANBU.

That must have been quite satisfying to say.

YABU

Yes YABU

The person is just processing it trying to make sense and having the realisation through association with the area. It brings it home, in other words

What is wrong with that exactly? You don't have to agree or sympathise but calling it out is mean and unnecessary

YANBU. This is one of my pet hates. I remember once there was a bomb or something in Brixton, and a colleague said it could have been them as they went to Clapham three months earlier. What rubbish.

No it wasn't you involved, and funnily enough this situation is not all about you. It is about the poor people who died in Barcelona, and their family and friends. This me me me attitude makes me so angry.

Flowers to anyone genuinely involved.

YANBU. There have been terror attacks in London, Paris, Manchester, Nice, Barcelona, Berlin, and so on. It 'could have been' literally millions of people.

ShoesHaveSouls · 18/08/2017 00:09

YANBU - people making it about them are very annoying.

But saying that, it is freaky to have a terrorist attack somewhere you just were, iyswim.

The Brussels terror attacks happened a fortnight after my DS1 was on a school trip there - and whilst I didn't announce it in FB or social media - it did freak me out.

Twats. Twats twats twats.

Like the Facebook 'Amy has marked herself as safe' thing after the London Bridge attack when she lives and works in Didcot.

Don't get me started on the people who offered 'shelter and blood will donate if needed and travel to the area' from bloody Leon or similar just to get in on the action/drama.

We were in Tunisia a year to the exact date in s neighbouring hotel in Sousse.

I've walked down the Las Ramlas hundreds of times.

I've been down the Promonade de Anglais several times.

It means nothing.

YANBU to reply as you did.

I hate it when people mark they're 'safe' on db. It's total wank!

good on you - I'm all for catastrophising my own life but really don't see how anyone can extend it to that degree... I took a beating on a f/b post for different reason (calling out racism) and it was brutal so I hope you're ok!

Report
saoirse31 · 18/08/2017 00:15

I think you're being a bit unreasonable, if you've been somewhere, on the same street, two wks ago, and there's a terrorist attack there today, how could u not think that? And these days for some to think is to post. I don't see that as particularly attention seeking tbh. Some of other examples posters mention, yes, but not that.

YWBU to rise to the bait.

You should have rolled your eyes and just posted 'omg u ok hun xxxxx' Grin

They're just being needy and attention seeking and can't think of another way to make it about themselves.

Just out of interest, did they mention the victims?

Logically I know what you're saying is right.

Unlogically I do tend to think stuff like this in my head.

However I don't post it in FB.

But actually I forgot about the guardian angel thing, so I'm changing to yanbu.

Yep I have had this too. My exh (DS's DF) is actually there and witnessed the fallout after he got off the metro before it was halted).
Every time there is a disaster it gets to be like this.
I could have been in the twin towers the day the planes hit. I wasn't. Life took a different path. Hence my conversation with 13 yo DS about his dad and our planned trip to New York - if your number is up -
It's up whether it be Barca, London, Manchester, Paris - just live your life!

My family & I were there last week. It makes it so real, so close to home when you can just imagine it all. It's awful for everyone.

Grin at Ferrets vid, good example of how the OP is so different to the 'those poor people, I'm thankful for what I've got' feelings.
