AIBU?

Man in post office tried to do this!

Was in a queue at post office this morning with ds and did. Man in front of us is called to the desk with the shoebox he is carrying. Post Office man asks what is inside (as they normally do) and man replies...

..a Guinea Pig. Shock

A live Guinea pig. He wants to send it to his daughter who lives in X (city about 100 miles from here). Post Office man tells he he can't because it will be hurt/killed/escape etc and post office won't accept live animals. Man argues, throws a tantrum and storms off leaving the box and the Guinea pig on the desk. Sad

Post Office staff decided to call rspca amongst themselves. But my kids were upset at poor Guinea pig being abandoned... So we offered to look after him for them. DH (once he got over the shock) is now cleaning out a borrowed hutch for him and we'll buy him one if man doesn't come back for him (we left contact details with po just in case he did)

Aibu to think anyone could be so cruel and stupid Hmm?

Who would do that. Was there no holes in the box either. The poor little thing would have suffocated in no time. Thank God you were there.
Did he honestly think. The post office were going to take a live animal off him and post it.
A lot more sense he'd be an idiot

What a wanker, some people are really stupid. Thank goodness you were there to look after him, at least the PO called the RSPCA as well.

No don't give it back to the man, he has proved he is not capable of looking after a pet properly.

I'd have grave concerns about giving the poor thing back

If you keep it, you need a second one. Guinea pigs need company.

Are you near reading we have an indoor hutch you can have for free if you are.

Thank god you were there but why would you give your details? He will just post it elsewhere and lie about the contents! Do NOT let him have it back, lie if you have to and say it is elsewhere. He is a total wanker. That poor GP.

If the post office have his details they should still report him to the RSPCA. What a dick. Glad you were there.

Would the post office be able circulate any cctv image on social media of the man incase he tried it again at another branch?

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 31/07/2017 15:04

God, no, don't give it back! The bloody idiot has already proved he isn't able to care for it.

I wouldn't give it back.

I would think the man maybe has some mh issues or a disability of some sort because the vast majority of adults would know they can't send an animal by post.

It would probably have died of shock - guinea pigs are very nervous creatures and it takes next to no stress to kill one.

If he does contact you, tell him that that is what happened. It was dead by the time you got it home and the vet reckons the stress of being in the small box was what killed it. (You checked this because you were worried that if it was something contagious your own guinea pig would've caught it.) Coincidentallyidentally your is the spitting image of the other one. What are the chances of that?

Bloody hell!

There must be a specialist company that can move live animals, but the PO definitely isn't one of them!

Got any pics of piggy yet? Does s/he have a name?

Don't give it back, for God's sake!

Not that I think the bloke is coming back really. But still.

Did you actually want a guinea pig? Grin

Piggies do like company, but if it's a male and you get another male, they will bicker.
Well done for the rescue but do not return it to the incompetent man!

People can be so stupid. How dod he think a guinea pig would survive being posted? I am glad you have rescued it OP. I rather think you now have a permanent addition to your family.

Thanks for the offer unicorn but we're up in the North West unfortunately

Thanks for the reassurance that we shouldn't give him back. It was the post office's request that we left our details but somehow I don't think they will need them. The post office took the labels that had been on the box so they at least have some chance of finding the man through that. It had air holes in it and some hay but no water or proper food

He's settling in well to his temporary hutch. Must have been hungry because he went straight to the food but he's going to be fine now (no thanks to that silly man). We will of course find him a friend (db knows someone who owns a small animal rescue so we will probably speak to them)

It's a boy Guinea pig so I've told the kids we are calling him (postman) Pat Grin

Well done for rescuing the guinea pig! Make sure you keep him on a lead if you take him for a walk though...
