AIBU?

Am I being really dishonest and insincere?

Rubbish (and long) AIBU but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I can't decide if I'm Lib Dem or Labour. Not sure how to decide.

I've voted Lib Dem in every election that I've voted in so far, but whenever anyone asks who I'm voting for or which party I support, they always seem to dismiss the Lib Dems.

In the 2017 election, for example, I voted for the Lib Dems because I agreed most with their policies on the EU and mental health (two things that I feel really strongly about). The seat that I voted in is a safe Labour seat though (Harriet Harman's constituency). Although I respect her as an MP and was glad that she got in again, I preferred to vote for the Lib Dems for the reasons listed above.

Especially since Brexit last year, ive become much more interested in politics and the idea of working in politics. I've been looking on the 'w4mp' website, and most of the vacancies on there are for working with Conservative or Labour MPs.

There's a vacancy, for example, for a caseworker role with Emma Dent Coad (the new Labour MP for Kensington and Chelsea). I'd really like to apply for the role, partly because there are many Labour policies that I agree with and because I also respect her as an MP and what she's done for Kensington and Chelsea over the last few years before being elected. But I feel that, in general, I support the Lib Dems more than Labour. (Really pleased that Vince Cable is the new leader as well - I really respect him, and think he'll do a great job).

So would it be really insincere and dishonest if I apply for the caseworker job with Emma Dent Coad? Or is it okay? WWYD?

I think as long as you do the job to the best of your abilities, you can vote for whoever you like. If you took a job working for someone you wouldn't vote for, and deliberately do a bad job to sabotage their chances, that is obviously wrong.

I am often entertained by the idea of politicians voting against what they stand for. I am not wholly convinced that all the politicians voted the way they campaigned on Brexit, for example!

If you were going to work for the Tories or UKIP then that would BU as you would (presumably) dislike everything that they stand for.

But I think there's quite an overlap between Labour, LibDems and the Greens. I've voted for all 3 of them in the past and although I'm now a member of the Labour Party there are a number of LibDem and Green party policies that I really like.

You respect Emma Dent Coad and agree with some Labour policies. I think that they're good enough reasons to apply for the role. After all, not all Labour Party members, voters or MPs agree with all the Labour policies.

Go for the job. Working for someone doesn't mean they get the right to tell you how to vote.

Go for it

I would say working for an MP/party that you feel strongly against is never going to work. But as you respect the MP and her party I think it'll be fine. There's a lot of shared ideology between lib dems and labour, even if they differ on the details.

"partly because there are many Labour policies that I agree with". Fine and good. How will you feel if you end up working on something that you disagree with on principle? There's overlap between the lib dems and the tories, too. Where you draw your ideological line is up to you.

Go for it. I was featured on a party's campaign leaflets recently because they sorted my tax for me. I was happy to help but I voted for someone else at the last minute
