Okay I'm probably BU but I decided to listen to Space Doggity again and started reading stuff about Laika and I'm just HORRENDOUSLY angry at the people who did this to her and how scared she must have been and how alone she must have been when she died :(

I have 0 maternal instinct for babies but all I want to do is cuddle that poor dog who died terrified and alone in space.

I'm gonna do some tribute art but I'm just so sad and I don't really know WHY this has hit me so hard.

Can't you think of anything more recent to sob about?

Sophieelmer · 27/07/2017 07:26

Yes YABU to lay in bed crying about a dog that died what 69 yrs ago? Get up a do something about the injustices and cruelties happening in the world today.

SerfTerf · 27/07/2017 07:27

It was a very cruel "mission".

Are you okay otherwise?

Believeitornot · 27/07/2017 07:28

What has this got to do with maternal instinct? Do you have empathy for other humans?

Ifailed · 27/07/2017 07:29

Laika probably got better treatment than the 10,000s of animals still being used to test cosmetics. Maybe take up their cause, you might be able to achieve something?

alltouchedout · 27/07/2017 07:30

We can be vile, yes.
Does it help at all to think of the times when we are brilliant and kind and brave instead?

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 27/07/2017 07:30

Um....do you have any other things going on in your life making you anxious/upset.
I'm just wondering if Laika represents something you can get upset over instead of dealing with the real issue. I mean this kindly but it is a bit bonkers to be upset like this over a dog dying in space half a century ago. Of course it's awful but animals are treated horrifically every day of the year. I get upset over the treatment of factory farmed animals but I suspect not to the same extent as you.

Charlieiscool · 27/07/2017 07:31

I think this must be triggering something you have felt yourself. Does it remind you of a personal experience?

Collidascope · 27/07/2017 07:33

I get it, OP. There's something very innocent about dogs, and they never grow out of it and become petty and dickish like a lot of humans/babies do. I think it's the fact that they depend on us so utterly too and they can't comprehend the nature of their suffering or solve it. It's a massive betrayal to do something like that to an animal that is so implicitly trusting.

HipsterHunter · 27/07/2017 07:33

Humans can be awful, but I can think of a lot more things that are more horrific to Ben sobbing about at 5am.

LinoleumBlownapart · 27/07/2017 07:36

The people who did this feel remorse. It won't bring her back or change anything but she would have died slowly, hungry and alone if she was left on the streets. At least she was loved in her final days, and she was if you read the reports by the trainers. I think you will find nothing but cold and depressing thoughts if you only focus on the cold and depressing aspects.

lanouvelleheloise · 27/07/2017 07:37

Are you vegetarian?

MrMessy · 27/07/2017 07:40

My dd got very upset about this when she was 6. She doesn't mention it anymore now though.

caffeinestream · 27/07/2017 07:40

What about all the animals in labs being tested for cosmetics at the moment?

CockacidalManiac · 27/07/2017 07:41

Of all the history of the USSR, it seems weird to me that it's Laika that you're upset about. I'd rate the White Sea Canal and Gulag system slightly higher in the 'horrible' stakes.

pigeondujour · 27/07/2017 07:46

Some people are so tight on here sometimes! Most people know that crying over something you might not usually feeling. Tends to make you feel lots better afterwards. Hope you're okay now OP. (And who cares if you're vegetarian or not Smile)

PetalHead · 27/07/2017 07:46

Aww OP I think some people are being a bit mean. Agree with some PPs that it may have triggered some built-up stress or worry in you?

But I do think it's a very sad story. I once heard a radio play about Laika and I was in floods of tears (and I'm a cat person and don't like dogs!)

Rather than sobbing and tribute art to a dog that's been dead 70 years, perhaps you could channel your energy into fundraising or volunteering for a current dog rescue. Hmm

MyRedPepper · 27/07/2017 07:50

Oh come on.... we all have been hit but what could be the most 'innocent' or not so bad in the gran skim of things.
If you start with the Gulag or the Holocaust, then most others things will look pale in comparaison, incl let's the terrorist attack in London.

You just can NOT take the worst thing in the world and then say actually xxxx is nothing in comparaison.

ink my experience (eg bursting into tears watching a film -with actors!- on tv) is that usually the issue wasnt so much the film/story but something else. Oh and giving birth. That seems to have made me very sensitive to any hurt to anyone/any animal.
What is going on forcyou at the moment?

PetalHead · 27/07/2017 07:50

And people saying there are worse things to cry about, oh give over.

You can have a sob about a dog if you want, it doesn't mean you don't care about human misery, the gulags, syria or a million other things. Maybe it just means it upset you because you have a heart! (Unlike some sneery posters)

pigeondujour · 27/07/2017 07:53

@00100001 no one's stopping you Hmm

MyRedPepper · 27/07/2017 07:53

MN is just awful at the moment.
Compassion seems to have gone out of window. Can't people see just a little but further than the end if their nose and see that it's not this dogs that are the main issue there???

It never happened to anyone here to cry during a film with animals (all NOT real fir course, they are actors after all) - so why did you dare crying? There are some more real serious issue around Hmm
Being judgemental like this isn't going to help the OP.

ClementineWardrobe · 27/07/2017 07:55

Laika case was bloody awful; I'm sorry it hit you so hard. For me it was the lies about it for decades after. There's a lovely statue in her memory and I don't think anything like that will ever happen again in the name of bloody space travel. There has been proper acceptance of what was done

Take care OP. You feel what you feel.

MrsJayy · 27/07/2017 07:57

I think people are being a bit mean of course there is worst things to get upset about there is no need to link to other tragedies it cheapens their tragedy to make a point. Op you don't need to pull yourself together it was very sad that animals were used like this but try and not dwell on it.
