Ongoing argument in our house so I'll let mumsnet decide. Is it safer/better to leave the keys in the front door at night or hanging close by? Person A thinks it's a security risk to leave the keys in the front door, burglars could smash the glass panel in the door and let themselves in with the keys. Person B thinks it's safer to leave the keys in the front door in the event of a fire.

I keep mine on my bedside table. I wouldn't put them anywhere near the door.

CharlieWork · 24/07/2017 20:45

Hanging close by. If there is a fire, they would be easily reached but it off sight of potential burglars, no?

Gizlotsmum · 24/07/2017 20:45

I'd leave them near but not in

SwedishEdith · 24/07/2017 20:46

I'm with person B. I'm way more worried about trying to fumble around in the dark for keys than a burglar.

MsSusanStoHelit · 24/07/2017 20:46

Person A is correct, but they should be very close to the door where everyone can reach them but burglars can't see/get to them.

Allyg1185 · 24/07/2017 20:48

I would hang them up close to the front door

totallyliterally · 24/07/2017 20:48

I have a solid door but leave them in as I am more scared of being trapped in a fire than being burglaries or the car stolen.

I am always amazed at people not having front door meets in or very near the door. In a fire and the smoke and disorientation I would not like to be hunting for them.

CremeFresh · 24/07/2017 20:48

If they're left in the door how will burglars see them to know to smash a window to get them ?

TittyGolightly · 24/07/2017 20:49

We leave them on the bottom step of the stairs - easy to get if need to get out but can't be seen from the front door.

OhMrBadger · 24/07/2017 20:50

In our old house, I never left the keys in the door as the glass panels were big and the keys partially visible. But I made sure the keys were kept in the same place every night so we could get out quickly. On our new house there is only one tiny little glass pane high up so no way could keys be reached unless Mr Tickle was breaking in. So, I leave the keys in the door.

So...person A is correct IMO!

MumsOnCrack · 24/07/2017 20:50

We leave ours in the door but where we live we are more likely to have a fire than to be burgled.

TupperwareTat · 24/07/2017 20:50

I'd change the door to a solid one.

IdentifiesAsASloth · 24/07/2017 20:50

I have them on a hook next to the front door. Far enough away from the letter box so that no one could reach but always in the same place so that it is second nature to reach for the hook.

Also a good idea to only have your house key on the hook as you don't want to be fumbling about searching for the right key in an emergency

I guess it depends on whether youve got glass in the door and how big it is .

MrsExpo · 24/07/2017 20:52

My DH leaves his keys in the front door lock overnight but I hate it!!! Friend who did the same was burgled a few years ago. Left keys in back door, burglar fiddled them out with wire, put hand through cat flap and simply let himself in. Ground floor of her house was wiped out while she slept upstairs. Very scary!!!

Extua · 24/07/2017 20:52

Person A is right imo. We have ours hanging on a wall by the door. Know where they are but unreachable through the door.

Hippee · 24/07/2017 20:54

We were burgled after leaving the keys in the door (while we were asleep upstairs) - the police told us not to do so and we have never done it since - we hang ours on a hook nearby.

kkkkaty123 · 24/07/2017 20:55

Hmmm we've been burgled. Advice given at the time after the bloody event was to not leave keys in the door. So I leave mine on a bottom stair every night. Btw they didn't get in by using the key they smashed out the lock in the door handle on the back door. They trashed my house, took items of extreme sentimental value and we've never got over it. And not one day goes by that I don't open my front door and look through straight to the back door to see if it's open. Just awful, wouldn't wish it on anyone. Except them. Wow sorry looks like I needed to vent.

kkkkaty123 · 24/07/2017 20:57

Hippee. That must have been terrifying. Thank god myself and the dc were out. We had had s lovely bank holiday day out.

YouTheCat · 24/07/2017 20:58

I keep my keys with me on the bedside table at night.

DJBaggySmalls · 24/07/2017 21:02

Neither is safe.
If its a mortice lock and you leave the keys in the door, burglars use superglue and a screwdriver to unlock the door from outside.

If you leave them near the front door they can use a fishing rod to snag them.

Absolutely ShockShockShock at pp saying they keep them on bedside table!

If burglars decide I am their target I don't want them thinking they need to go looking for keys (e.g to make an easier exit). Even worse if car keys are also attached as they may be looking for exactly that key!

There are so many safer yet still secure places to leave keys than next to your sleeping head!

Autumnchill · 24/07/2017 21:11

C - Get a Yale lock so you don't have to have keys to leave house

mummmy2017 · 24/07/2017 21:13

If your going to be burgled a locked door won't stop them, and so keys in the door in case of fire...
