To think this is too much gin?

I'm getting a bit concerned about how much DH drinks by himself.

Last night he put away half a bottle of gin. A small 70cl bottle, but all the same 🤔 . Not a special night or anything, just an after work drink in front of the telly .
I don't drink much and growing up my family weren't big drinkers either so I accept I might have a conservative idea of what's ok/ normal/ problematic.
But really, I think last night was 15-20 units. By himself. He does this 1-2 times a week and is v defensive about it. Should I just chill out or does he have a budding drinking problem?

That's binge drinking.

I'd say, yes, he has a problem. Not just the amount but how defensive he's being about it.

Creampastry · 22/07/2017 19:34

Way too much. I hope he's not driving the next morning??

backtobedplease · 22/07/2017 19:36

Hmm yes he did drive at 9am. I didn't think of that side of things 😧

The recommended amount of alcohol per week is now less than 14 units a week for both men and women. He's doubling that from what you've said.

DonaldStott · 22/07/2017 19:37

Erm, going to go against the grain here and say half a bottle of a 70cl bottle is not that much.

If he had a problem, he would have polished off the bottle.

Changerofname987654321 · 22/07/2017 19:38

It takes the average person 1 hour to process 1 unit of alcohol so I would hope he was not driving until later afternoon.

That is definitely a problem and so is the fact that he gets defensive about it.

The definition of binge drinking is drinking more than half your weekly recommended max in one sitting. So that would be 7 units for a man.

RapunzelsRealMom · 22/07/2017 19:39

I also don't think it's a huge problem. It's more than I'd like to drink but once or twice a week isn't THAT bad. Not ideal but, if he was an alcoholic, he'd drink much more than that.

PurpleDaisies · 22/07/2017 19:39

If he had a problem, he would have polished off the bottle.

That's not necessarily true.

PurpleDaisies · 22/07/2017 19:41

Does he drink anything else through the week or is it just the gin?

Sushi123 · 22/07/2017 19:42

That's fine, 1-2 times a week. I wouldn't worry about it

backtobedplease · 22/07/2017 19:42

The gin is not his usual tipple (I do the shopping and I don't buy it often because he does this). Usually it's wine/ beer.

Well on the basis that a single measure of gin is 25mls then that is quite a lots of gin he drank last night.

PurpleDaisies · 22/07/2017 19:44

How much wine/beer does he drink in a typical week? Does he have the gin as well?

Creampastry · 22/07/2017 19:44

He's driving under the influence.... that's your bigger problem

LaurieFairyCake · 22/07/2017 19:45

It's 13 units

dementedpixie · 22/07/2017 19:47

I don't think it's that bad tbh if he only does it once or twice a week. I have a bottle of wine on a Friday night and then 2-3 long vodkas on a Saturday (vodka, angostura bitters, lemonade and lime juice). I don't drink the rest of the week. That probably makes me a binge drinker too but I have plenty of days off to recover

PurpleDaisies · 22/07/2017 19:47

Being really pedantic laurie it's 14 units because that gin is 40%.

You think that drinking 12 gins when sitting in the house is not that much?

backtobedplease · 22/07/2017 19:47

He had a couple of beers to. I guess I just don't think it's healthy, physically or emotionally to be drinking like this. I'll get one of those morning after breathalyser thingies. That might be a bit of a reality check for him.

His measure will likely be bigger than a pub measure so wouldn't be 12 individual drinks

That's my favourite gin and that's a heck of a lot of it he drank.

PurpleDaisies · 22/07/2017 19:51

You're right op, it isn't healthy. People have lost sight of what the recommended amount of alcohol to consume in a week is.

His max should be 14 units. If he's drunk the gin twice that's already 28 units. Two beers probably takes that up to around 32 units.

backtobedplease · 22/07/2017 19:51

Wine/ beer in the week is harder to keep track of because its home brew. Probably 1 bottle of wine on one night (plus a couple of beers if it's been a busy day at work) then a couple more nights with 4-5 beers. Some weeks more, some less.
