To think it's not normal to break my toes as much as I do?

Have just broken my middle toe chasing the kids into their playroom, on the little wooden threshold thing. Which is a miracle as it's only about 5mm high!

This is the tenth time in my adult life I've broken a toe, it's usually the little ones, have once broken my big toe.

My toes are unusually long, I'm a size 7 foot, but even so is it normal to break them as much as I do? I think I need to pick my feet up a bit better

I break mine all the time. I've got adult size 9 1/2 feet, and am hypermobile. I'm also incredibly clumsy. Wearing shoes everywhere helps me.

NotAPuffin · 21/07/2017 10:29

I've never broken a bone, so no, it doesn't seem normal to me!

CauliflowerSqueeze · 21/07/2017 10:31

When I broke a toe after another toe was broken my GP sent me off for an osteopathy checkup. It was all fine so obviously I'm quite clumsy too!

WellThisIsShit · 21/07/2017 10:35

I'm the opposite of wow, I've been told my toes don't break because they dislocate so easily (I'm hyper mobile)! Toes are strange!

Maybe their is something wrong with your gait/ foot arch etc?

WellThisIsShit · 21/07/2017 10:36

Argh there not their!

LoniceraJaponica · 21/07/2017 10:38

No, I don't think it is normal. Have you had a bone density scan?

Lunenburg · 21/07/2017 10:38

I am a bit surprised. Have never known anyone with a broken toe, never mind 10 in their life.

Has your doctor screened you for Osteopenia. NB not Osteoporosis, but the lower bone density condition that precedes it.

I am part of a national screening pilot because my mother had Osteoporosis and have been being treated for low bone density since my 40's. The treatment has so far kept me out of the Osteoporosis category and ensured no broken bones !!

YellowLawn · 21/07/2017 10:40

no not normal.
yes to bone density scan and blood bone profile.
and wear steel toe shoes in future

I've broken the little toe on my right foot three times, I wonder if the first break (kicked a concrete bollard whilst furious and wearing sandals, may rank as the most stupid thing I have ever done) weakened it and now it's just more likely to break than the others are? Because my other toes can stay fine and whole from much, much harder impacts than it takes to mess that one up, and I've never broken any other bone so I doubt I have some sort of bone density problem.

PuppyMonkey · 21/07/2017 10:46

When you say you just broke it, do you mean you've had X-ray and etc? Or does it just feel like you've broken it?

I'm 50 and have never broken a toe and have never met anyone who has broken a toe.

WotsitWig · 21/07/2017 10:46

I seem to catch my feet all the time, but I haven't broken my toes (yet!). As others have already said, it might be worth having a bone density scan if you haven't had one already.

justilou · 21/07/2017 11:10

I was diagnosed today with osteopaenia because of the number of broken toes in the last few years.

toosexyforyahshirt · 21/07/2017 12:02

How do you know it's broken?

Nikephorus · 21/07/2017 13:08

The same little toe twice for me - kicking a banister (with bare feet) that I'd put on the floor while decorating the first time.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 21/07/2017 13:13

I've never broken a toe (or other bones), but I have damaged the cartilage in my little toe by snagging it on the door frame of a taxi while wearing sandals. It took months to heal properly!

DM has broken hers many times. I think mine have the advantage of being unusually short and stubby Grin

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 21/07/2017 14:58

I'm pretty sure it's token as it's pointing the wrong way Confused have blind it to the other toe now, I never go for x-rays (far too busy!) as the first time I broke one the doctor basically said "strap it to the next toe for a while for it to heal" and it has every time. Will call my GP though about one density.

Could that explain why my weighing scales put me a stone heavier these days?? WinkGrin

I've lost count of the number of broken toes I have had, and I have tiny size 3 feet. I have dyspraxia though which is why I don't know where my own feet are half the time.

flickerty · 21/07/2017 15:10

I've broken my foot three times in the space of 6 years. Also v clumsy!

Got me wondering about bone density now though Confused

Flamingosarepink · 21/07/2017 15:17

Perhaps start wearing slippers. Ive injured my feet too many times by being barefoot.

stonecircle · 21/07/2017 15:20

I've broken both my little toes (one recently). I've had so much problem with the first one, because the bones didn't set properly (I know this because When I had an X-ray on my ankle they commented on my toe) I asked for an x Ray for the recent one. Not dislocated so just strapped to adjacent toe.

Both breaks were because I was barefoot and caught my toe on a piece of furniture/skirting board. I also fractured my ankle last year.

I do have osteopenia but I think the breaks would have happened anyway.

flownthecoopkiwi · 21/07/2017 15:24

ouch. I have size 8 feet and never broken a toe, only one bone in total and that was from a massive sports related thump.
