Ridiculous villa owner request

AIBU to suggest that being asked to bring your own bed linen to make up the holiday beds is not on? Is this common?

OP posts:
Sidge · 20/07/2017 14:10

Err no. I have NEVER taken my own linen when I've stayed in holiday villas.

We're off to one next month and don't even have to take bath or beach towels as they're provided.

EssieTregowan · 20/07/2017 14:10

What, abroad?

That would be your luggage allowance fucked then.

No, not normal.

nokidshere · 20/07/2017 14:10

I won't go anywhere that says this but it's pretty common practice

mummymeister · 20/07/2017 14:10

have you booked this through airbnb by any chance?

GladysKnight · 20/07/2017 14:11

I'd expect it to be a lot cheaper. Only encountered this occasionally, maybe only once, in a static caravan. I think sometime people charge extra, which is fair enough I suppose, but none at all? Just about OK if you're driving but not on if you're flying, surely?

goose1964 · 20/07/2017 14:11

I've seen this plenty of times, often in cheaper properties

GladysKnight · 20/07/2017 14:12

...and even worse if you're going by train!

snowgirl1 · 20/07/2017 14:13

I haven't done many villa holidays, but the few I have been on didn't require me to take my own bed linen! But maybe it's specific to the country you're going to? Many French self-catering places require the guests to clean the apartment at the end of a stay, which really grates with me at the end of a holiday.

GladysKnight · 20/07/2017 14:13

My MiL likes us to do this too, but only fair as she's nearly 80 Grin

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/07/2017 14:13

I have seen this many times if booking directly with the owner.
If booking with an agent it is usually part of the cost.
I have also rented linen from a local 'linen rental agency' on the advice of the owner
If you are driving it is fine but if you are flying/ public transport of any sort it is a bit of a pain

northcoastmum · 20/07/2017 14:16

We have come across (and stayed in) a few properties in some parts of Europe (most frequently France) which charge a 'linen' fee. I think it's because a lot of European guests drive rather than flying so can bring their own bedlinen, thus removing the cost of linen and laundry. If you bring your own you obviously don't pay, and if you need bedlinen you only pay for the actual number of people who are staying (e.g. a family of 5 in a villa which could sleep 6-8)

bigmac4me · 20/07/2017 14:16

Have come across it frequently in this country but never in a villa abroad. Have you booked already? With such expensive luggage allowances it would be a real pain.

19lottie82 · 20/07/2017 14:16

I had this recently with an Air BnB, in the UK.

The owner didn't live in the area so had to employ a private cleaning company to come and remove the sheets, wash them and put clean ones on again.

They gave me the option of taking my own duvet / pillow / mattress covers, or paying something like £8 per bed to use theirs.

Rinkydinkypink · 20/07/2017 14:17

I've seen it loads but it puts me off booking! Along with no cleaning service for the end of my stay. I'm going on holiday why would I want to be making beds and cleaning and paying some one else for the pleasure! I don't think so!

PastaPosha · 20/07/2017 14:19

We arrived in a beautiful (and expensive) rental in France some years ago. We were met by the agent who said did you not bring your own linen?? We hadn't and hadn't had any notifications to do so, with much tsking and ooh la la'ing in a less than impressed way she furnished us with threadbare towels and some sheets. We will never go without checking and recheck ing again! Fwiw I am an airbnb host for a self contained property and I leave towels and spare towels, tea towels, sheets and blankets and spare of everything. Based on my own experience of being pissed off at the lack of such basics.

BeepBeepMOVE · 20/07/2017 14:23

I've seen it a few times in France, maybe once or twice the UK. So not unheard of but fairly uncommon.

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuck · 20/07/2017 14:24

YANBU. Blimey! 😨

Allthewaves · 20/07/2017 14:24

UK yes abroad no

coddiwomple · 20/07/2017 14:24

I have seen a few, I chose not to go there. It does seem quite common in France.

Happy kind of to be a laundry fee and a cleaning fee, but absolutely no way I would be lugging bedding in a plane, or clean a house when I leave. Even when we holiday in France, we arrange for the agency to get a cleaner.

I have seen it in a few properties in England, shame if it becomes common. That and electricity meters, means I won't book there.

ExplodedCloud · 20/07/2017 14:26

I've seen it in holiday cottages in the UK. And with no option to pay for the service either. Got caught out by it one year (my own fault) which was a pain as we needed 4 sets of linen.

Flumpernickel · 20/07/2017 14:26

Not encountered this, but we recently stayed in an (albeit) beautiful scottish lodge/villa and having paid £1550 for a week for 2 couples, there was a note in the visitors book, expecting us to strip all the beds and clean/run the hoover around to win 'brownie points' with the cleaner!!! Erm... no, do one! we are clean people and left it clean and tidy and emptied all bins etc, but theres no way I am paying that amount to run a fecking hoover round when the cost of the cleaner is already built in!
I wouldnt have minded, but when we arrived (early evening) there wasnt even a whole roll of toilet paper between all 4 of us and the nearest supermarket/convenience store was 20 miles away. That certainly didnt win any 'brownie points' with me! Hmm

Byo linen would put me right off.

Flumpernickel · 20/07/2017 14:27

Oh, and there was also a electricity meter usage limit! Shock

AFAIK this is very common in France. We've frequently paid extra to have linen supplied.

coddiwomple · 20/07/2017 14:29

trip all the beds and clean/run the hoover around to win 'brownie points' with the cleaner!!!

the cheek of some owners, it's unbelievable. They are in the wrong business!

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 20/07/2017 14:30

I might be wrong, but I'd think that would be the perfect way to encourage bedbugs? Different bedding coming in from different locations - then traveling home in suitcases. I've been in hostels in the past that don't allow you to bring your own sleeping-bags for that reason. I can see how that would be easier for the hosts, but I wouldn't choose to go somewhere with that set-up.
