Would you accept this council house?

I'm currently renting a house for £360 per month from a housing association.
Not in the best location.
I bidded on a house (through council ) it's only 7 years old, much better location and massive garden ,£380 per month.
I went for viewing today and I was the only person who turned up.
Anyway if I get offered it,do I take it?
It's going to mean new carpets, decorating.
Luckily the council have just painted all ceilings and all walls white but I would want to put my own stamp on things.
What would you do?
It's great rent price and still leaves us with a lot of spare money in the month for other things.
Is it worth moving for better location ?
Its bigger too.
I'm in two minds

It's in a better location and it's bigger with a great garden? Why wouldn't you take it?

DonaldStott · 19/07/2017 18:13

I don't understand why you are struggling to make a decision.

Soubriquet · 19/07/2017 18:14

Bite their hands off ffs!!

A secure tenancy with a huge garden?

Are you mad to even say no?

ItsAHardKn0ckLife · 19/07/2017 18:14

What's the downside?

wonderingsoul · 19/07/2017 18:14

Why wouldnt you?

Of course you should!

SparklyLeprechaun · 19/07/2017 18:15

Better location, bigger house, you can afford it, why wouldn't you take it?

MyfatheristheKing · 19/07/2017 18:15

Sounds like a no brainer? At least it's a blank canvas, we moved a few months ago and spent weeks painting over black walls (I kid you not the walls were painted black!) and taking off layers upon layers of wall paper :( not to mention all the hard work the garden has been

Moanyoldcow · 19/07/2017 18:16

Of course you should! Better location, bigger house - no brained!

PatMullins · 19/07/2017 18:16

Why do I sense a twist

BewareOfDragons · 19/07/2017 18:17

Seriously? Why wouldn't you jump at it!

You will then have all the time in the world to add your own touches to it!

WorraLiberty · 19/07/2017 18:17

Is this some sort of weird stealth boast, or are you going to drip feed that it will mean moving your kids from wonderful outstanding schools, or having your pet hamster put to sleep?

I'm just not getting the dilemma, let alone the AIBU? Confused

honeysucklejasmine · 19/07/2017 18:18

Why are you hesitating? You don't mention a downside...

peterkin · 19/07/2017 18:19

Is it just that you can't face the thought of moving and redecorating? If so then you need to push on through, it will be well worth it in the end!

Would love to have a garden.

Charming1234 · 19/07/2017 18:20

YABU for even posting this in AIBU. Take it.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 19/07/2017 18:20

I was thinking that too pat

wobblywonderwoman · 19/07/2017 18:21

Of course you should. It freshly painted, larger garden only five pounds a week more. Are the neighbours OK? Can you ask around.

PinkHeart5911 · 19/07/2017 18:22

So for £20 extra a month your get a nicer house, big garden and in a better location? How can that not be a good deal?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/07/2017 18:23

I think this is a short term pain: long term gain scenario.

You are struggling to see past the hassle of moving and redecorating to the longer term benefits.
So for the next six months your life may be less pleasant if you move but after that six months your life is likely to be better for a long time.

Based on what you've posted - I'd move

picklemepopcorn · 19/07/2017 18:23

It's worth the stress of moving for a better house. It will cost a bit, but carpet can be very cheap and durable these days.
If you are prepared to rough it a bit while you save up for curtains/blinds etc, you'll be fine.

Ashkey234 · 19/07/2017 18:23

Having to fork out on all brand new carpets, about £700 including fitting.
Ringing every credit card/bank/sky/broadband changing details etc
I know it might sound daft but it's playing on my mind

You don't have to do everything right away. Ringing to change addresses is not a big deal

Gee, why on earth do you need our input? You're unbelievably fortunate. Yes, you will have to spend a bit of money to make it home but you've already said you can afford it so why the hesitation. Here in London your monthly rent is not a lot more than a WEEKLY rent here!!!
