To think there's not a tin opener in the world that actually works as it should.

I've been through so many different designs now and the £15 one is exactly as hopeless as the 79p Wilko one.

DH has bought two electric ones recently... both ended up in the bin.

Our latest one seems like a basic design of old which I bought with hope in my heart (cannot recall them not working in the 70s when I was a lass). However, it takes about 300 turns of the handle to get it to move 1cm around the tin edge.

I have arthritis in both wrists and can no longer put up with this nonsense. Surely, in this day and age there must be a tin opener that does what it says on the tin. Sad

This thread is quite old, but if you’ve landed here looking for advice on what kitchen tools to buy, we’ve recently updated our best can opener page with loads of Mumsnetter-approved products, including both manual and electric options. We hope you find it helpful.

I like my pampered chef one

Blunts the tin top so its safer and has a little gadget that you can remove the lid with

Shame they stopped doing it in this country

I feel your struggle. I'm currently using a £4 morrisons one which hasn't broken yet.

DH and I are both left handed and can only use those metal ones. If we get a plastic thing we both stand scratching our heads Grin My right handed brother laughs at us.

Electric tin openers are the best! We got one as a wedding present and it's fab. At work they have a normal one and it takes ages to open a tin of tuna!

I am convinced that the only one that works properly is the one in my mum's kitchen drawer, I think I might steal it!

TofuCat I think my current one is a Morrisons, but it takes 300 turns of the handle to move 1cm. DS actually counted and measured!

To make matters worse, I bought tuna last week without ring pulls by accident. God only knows when it will get eaten... when someone has an hour to spare I suppose. Hmm

This type, common in the Uk, is fucking dreadful.

Oxo Good Grip products are brilliant. I've also got their potato peeler and its hands down my winner.

We've got one of these and it's THE BEST THING I'VE EVER OWNED. Seriously, when we got it I was begging the kids to have something out of a tin all weekend so I could use it again.

It's really quick and has a magnet on it for the lid too!

I'm with Rivers. Takes the lid off first time AND leaves the tin finger safe. Far safer and cleaner than ring-pull tins as well.

When our old one died I despaired of getting another ... until I saw one in the tiny site shop on our first camping trip.

Best 99p I ever spent.

I agree. We've just bought a new on for £2ish. We didn't want to spend a lot seeing as most tins now have the ring pulls.....but good heavens trying to get into tuna or mushy peas is a nightmare.

That one that Rivers posted looks suspiciously like my granny's. I don't recall her ever swearing at tins.

I'm like this with potato peelers too. The ancient one my mum had was perfect. I miss it. I don't know where it went but everything I've used since is SHITE

We're the same, tried various different can openers and don't have joy or longevity with any of them. It doesn't help that I'm right-handed and DH is left-handed. We've ended up with two butterfly style openers, mine was dirt cheap £2 and his cost a fortune from a lefties shop!

I keep showing DS the pictures as they are posted. He glances and says... 'nah, we've done that one already'.

We once had one from Ikea that was called Dolphin or something. It was claimed to be the dog's bollocks of tin openers. Was it shit.

We have this one. Had it for three years now. I'm right handed and struggle with wrist grip some days and I can use it without any issues. DP is left handed and also uses it without a problem. It is dishwasher safe too.

My DH introduced me to the old fashioned 'stabby' tin openers. At first I was like 'no', but now I realise that they are the only ones that consistently work.

Argos one looks good and a good price. Will try to get to Argos this week.

That Zyilis one also looks good.
