The whole "commenting here to placemark" thing doesn't bother me but I know it gets some people's backs up. AIBU in telling you about an awesome new discovery I made today Grin ?? Namely if you hover your mouse over the bottom right corner of the last post you've read, it gives you the option to "bookmark" it (the option i hidden until you hover). Then, when you next open the thread it takes you straight to that post! It can be done on any post in the thread, not just the last one, so also useful when RL unavoidably encroaches in the middle of reading a particularly juicy thread Grin. My ghast is well and truly flabby right now!!! Or do most people know about this anyway and I'm just a sad loser failing to be helpful??

I have been here a long time but never knew what bookmarking did. You can just watch a thread rather than placemark. I have no idea why so may people don't use watch rather than place mark but place mark doesn't bother me that much.

Is there a way to do it on the mobile site though?

I think they add a comment to the thread so they get the deletion message...if you're just watching one, and if goes poof, it just disappears from your list.

I always watch threads rather than post to placemark.

The problem with the bookmark function is that it seems to take you to that same spot forever.

I have never worked out how it could take you to a later bookmark in the same thread. If anyone can tell me that would be great!

Otherwise I shall continue to watch, unwatch and watch threads again!

I seem to remember reading in a recent discussion about placemarking versus "watch the thread" that it emails you whenever a new comment is posted so folk said that would put them off using that? Not sure if that's the case as I've never used "watch the thread" though...

Bloody, there's a drop down arrow once on the thread, just select watch this thread

I heard about it - but can't do it - maybe because I'm on a laptop? Confused

Ocelot. When you return to a thread it takes you to your bookmark, as you've said. You then read the subsequent posts - maybe add a post of your own as well. When you've got to the last post that you've read (or your post) then you bookmark that.

You can only have one bookmark per thread, so you just keep moving the bookmark as the thread moves on.

@bloodymaria tap the three little dots to give you the bookmark option.

I bloody love "Watch this Thread". When I'm short on time I watch loads, then later when the kids are in bed and I have more time to waste, I can go straight back to them.

For those on laptops/the desktop site you need to go into Customise www.mumsnet.com/Talk?call=Preferences, scroll down to where it says Display Bookmark Links, click on Yes and then scroll down a bit to Save Changes.

I'm using d/t site on my iPad and have found that there is nothing to tell you it's an option but if you tap on the comment you want to bookmark the word bookmark appears in the bottom right corner which obviously you then press..

Il try to screenshot it and post the picture.

Yep, been bookmarking for years (ever since they first introduced it).

Deleted threads - I just go to my computer or phone's browser history and find deletion messages that way, even if I haven't posted on the thread in question.

Thanks to those who posted re subsequent bookmarks.

Somehow I seem to only be able to have one bookmark i.e. The first one. Will play again.

Yes, the desktop site on iPad works the same way as the desktop site on a laptop/computer.

Bookmarking is not available if your preference is set to "MN Classic"

Report
FruBayerischOla · 10/07/2017 11:25

Ocelot. You need to move the bookmark each time.

Think of it as a hard-copy bookmarker you'd use in a hard-copy book. Say you return to the book and your B/M is on page 54 - but you read another 20 pages, so you need to put your B/M into page 74!

On iphone app, slide the comment you want to bookmark to the left and you'll see the option. To watch the thread, slide the title to the left
