AIBU?

To be irrationally annoyed by 'Breggsit'

Because it's Brexit and actually there are no G's in the whole entirety of the word?

It doesn't even appear to be a north/south pronunciation issue but entirely random.

What induces people to pronounce it in such a strange way (and get away with it)?

See also 'Eggsit' from whence I suspect it came.

It's awful isn't it?

Never noticed this so had to say it out loud to see how I say it. It's fine I'm safe but slightly pissed at you OP for pointing it out as will drive me insane when I hear it

I think in R.P you are supposed to use more of a soft double g type of an x sound to avoid a glottal stop. So should be somewhere between 'gg' and 'x'.

I resisted the word in all its forms for ages. Cutesy or irritating abbreviations, blech. See also Oxbridge etc.

If people have to say it (and I think it's pretty much inescapable now) I prefer the Breksit pronunciation. Also gooseberry rather than guzberry. But it's all just preference, accents, dialects. The word itself bothers me more.

Or should that be Oggsbridge Grin

oh indeed, there is an X in the word, not a G!

see also negotiations which has suddenly become negoSEE-a-shuns...fuck off it's negoSHE-a-shuns.

If you want to say "see" in the middle then why are you not saying nego-SEE-a-SEE-ons huh...cos it's wrong isn't it?? So do it properly.

I also hate the word Brexit in all its forms. I can't believe it is actually an accepted word.

In honour of this annoying term and the fact people keep dividing it into hard brexit and soft Brexit when neither actually exists, I now refer to it as a cooked Brexit, scrambled Brexit, poached Brexit, Brexit on toast, Brexit and soldiers, boiled Brexit or baked Brexit

I also hate the word Brexit in all its forms. I can't believe it is actually an accepted word. it's a portmanteau - not officially a real word but by the rules of language it is acceptable

May I throw nausea and nauseous into to the ring because they're words which irk me when mispronounced.
