Varificals turning rectangles into trapeziums?

I've worn varifocals (from Boots Optician) for 2 years but have now been given a stronger prescription and my new varificals are from Specsavers. I picked them up yesterday so I'm just getting used to them. They're not too uncomfortable, but one thing I notice is when I read something rectangular with portrait orientation like a book, phone, menu etc, it's slightly distorted so the top is wider than the bottom - a trapezium.

When I turn my phone sideways it looks curved rather than flat.

Is this to be expected or would I be unreasonable to think it was a problem?

Perhaps your eyes just need to adjust. I just got new specs, and it took me about a week to adjust to the stronger prescription.

That doesn't sound normal. I've had varifocals for over 10 years. The only time I've had an issue with them was my first ever pair that made me so seasick I had to take them back. They discovered the prescription was wrong (also Specsavers).

I would take them back.

The last time I had a problem where a regular shape was clearly distorted, they'd written my prescription down wrongly.

I got varifocals a few weeks ago, from Specsavers, and have a similar problem with things like door frames having an inward curve. And everything moves weirdly! Thankfully I rarely wear them as I wear lenses but I don't think my lenses are right either. My vision is fairly blurry. I think I might go and get another eye test someplace else and see if the prescription is the same!

it's just a lens distortion, it could e because of your new prescription, it could be due to the different design of the varifocal

it is always there, but your brain will learn to filter it out....it knows your phone isn't curved, and books are rectangular so you stop noticing it.

I am really short sighted so If I look through the edges of my lenses then ceilings/corners on walls are bowed...you just only notice it when you look for it.
It's more prevalent in high astigmatism prescriptions, hi index lenses, and varifocals...you are well blessed if you tick all three boxes for your specs!
Some folks are more sensitive to it than others..it drives me potty, so that's why I wear lenses! And I haven't dared venture into vari specs yet.
