AIBU?

To think this 'no sex baby' thing is ridiculous!?

I'm posting this as over the past 24 hours I've seen a post on here about someone thinking babies should not be assigned a gender and should wait till they're older and then just seen a news article where a couple have had 'unknown sex' on their babies birth cert!

AIBU to think it's ridiculous to try and make out like your child has no sex? Obviously they do. Gender IMO is different and as they go older by all means let them identify as the male female whatever but it's silly to not assign a sex when they obviously have a penis or vagina?

The reason I think this most is girls will be told about periods etc because it is what they will experience because they are female! So they're gonna know at some point right? Argh!

I know this isn't the most PC post but AIBU?ConfusedHmm

its utter nonsense. They will have totally different hormones by the age of 3/4. They are not the same at all, and deciding it is fashionable to pretend boys and girls are the same makes as much sense as deciding it is discrimination to say that cats don't fly

I actually think it's abusive, particularly for girls. It's utterly unfair to raise your daughter in a world like this and not prepare her for what she will face as a woman.

Ignorance of being female does not cure you of being opressed as a female.

YANBU. Who benefits from the 'unknown' gender? Not the child. Not those entrusted with care of the child (nursery/school etc).

It's the parent expecting the child to conform to their way of viewing the world, a way that involves pretending the reality of sex differentiation needn't exist.

I don't believe for a second that they were allowed to register their baby as "unknown sex". That didn't happen.

May come across as a bit thick here, but how do you have a no sex child. Now I was always brought up to know that if it has a willy it's a boy, a foo foo it's a girl.
Some one been sniffing something?

It reminds me of the story a few years ago where the parents refused to tell anyone the sex of their baby. Even family i think.

I will preface this by saying that I am a MN bogeyman because my eldest is trans. I will also say that I abhor people who falsely claim to suffer from gender dysphoria in order to satisfy some perversion.

Sex (which is assigned at birth according to biology) is vastly different from gender identity. For most people the two align, for some they don't. It's vital to know the sex of a person because our biology dictates certain health care needs, therefore I think it should be on the BC.

Whether a person needs to transition later in life is a different matter.
Personally I believe that gender identity is on a spectrum rather than binary but society isn't geared for that. Yet.

Do you mean this story?

www.thesun.co.uk/news/3934423/gender-unknown-baby-registered/

The parent is attempting to go through the court system in Canada to insist on the sex of the baby being recorded as unknown. They have not yet been successful.

I think it is futile to try and hide the sex of a baby like this, and pointless too. Unless the child is never cared for by anyone other than the parents, and when older is not taught about basic biology, it will be very apparent what sex this child is. The child themselves will be able to work it out!

I totally agree with not foisting sex based stereotypes onto children, but the way to do that is not to try and hide their biological sex. The way to do it is to say that yes, they're a boy/girl (delete as appropriate!) and that has no bearing on what you can do as you grow up.

What Fl0ella said.

Although I don't understand fully who gets to decide what the spectrum encompasses to start with.

That doesn't make you a "bogeyman" or controversial. Being a mad TRA or saying mad TRA things might. Most trans people I meet are perfectly reasonable human beings who want nothing to do with the politicised lunacy.

Sex is OBSERVED at birth and no observation OR assignation of gender is made at birth at all, is it?

"Gender identity" to me is a way of expressing dissatisfaction with the stereotyped gender roles that are often forced on us by our society and culture. It's not innate, it's a reaction to outside expectations. I'd rather there was no such thing as gender identity and no expectations of people based on their sex. Then we could all just be people with personalities who also happen to be male or female.
