Corbyn brexit single market let down

Rabbityrabbitcarrot · 29/06/2017 22:15

So today corbyn has sacked some members of his front bench because they voted to leave the single market against his wishes

Labours manifesto stated. "We will scrap the Conservatives’ Brexit White Paper and replace it with fresh negotiating priorities that have a strong emphasis on retaining the benefits of the Single Market and the Customs Union – which are essential for maintaining industries, jobs and businesses in Britain. Labour will always put jobs and the economy first."

So corbyn has done a 100% U-turn on the single market and lead millions believing that they were voting to stay as per their manifesto.
I voted remain and labour because of this and feel very let down

I'm furious with Corbyn. It's a complete betrayal of the manifesto.

49 Labour MPs supported Chuka Umunna's amendment to the Queen's Speech calling for continued membership of the single market Brexit.

Corbyn issued a three-line whip to abstain, ensuring the amendment would be defeated.

Even in opposition he can't stick to a promise.

The thing is, Teresa wants all the benefits of the single market too but without the freedom of movement, red tape and cost. It is a pipe dream. Junker will never allow it otherwise others will follow and the eu will die. Corbyn will not get it either and knows it so will vote it down

Er, what? Your OP is entirely inaccurate - like, outright incorrect. Are you determined to find reasons to fume at Corbyn? Because there are legitimate reasons to be a bit narked by the whip (although I don't agree with them), it's just that you're OP doesn't address any of them; it's just compete nonsense!

Oh, and Chukka was a jerk to do that. The manifesto was decided at conference not all that long ago and that position and wording was agreed on democratically. They deliberately DIDN'T agree to write "we will defo stay in the single market no matter what" because, you know, NEGOTIATING. So they are prioritising retaining the benefits without saying they will retain them at all costs which honestly surprised us coming as a surprise to anyone, as every bloody interviewer during the election campaign asked every single labour representative the Brexit question and this is what they ALL said.

Multiple people have now just stated the OP is incorrect and that didn't happen.

Can you explain what actually happened then?

Genuine question

YANBU, OP. I am apoplectic at this betrayal of Labour values. Don't know why - I left Labour because of Corbyn. He's more UKIP than Farage.

Voila article from the independent

So Chukka proposed an amendment that stated many things, one being that if Theresa May reached no deal then we'd stay in the EU rather than leaving without one. That alone means anyone voting in favour this is voting against the manifesto because the manifesto specifically says Labour will uphold the referendum result to leave the EU.

The OP says these labour mps voted to LEAVE the single market, but in fact they voted for this amendment which includes the notion that Labour would REMAIN in the single market. The manifesto says Labour will prioritise retaining the benefits of membership, but obviously saying we'll definitely stay in both is a huge commitment to make when you don't know what you'd have to sacrifice to achieve that, and it may not be a price worth paying!

So three front-benchers were sacked. Rightly. Because the manifesto is very clear and this amendment is total freestyling on the part of these MPs who clearly have no respect for Labour's democratically arrived-at position as stated in their manifesto, and it's whole purpose was to divide.

Oh yeah, and the OP says Corbyn U-turn, but in fact he's just upheld the manifesto position - quite patently, as the OP even quotes that position from the manifesto - and anyone who was even slightly confused by what that wording meant couldn't possibly have listened to a single labour interview during the election campaign as it was clarified many times. So to claim a U-turn on the part of CORBYN is ludicrous! Better to claim u-turn on the part of those mps who voted for this as they got themselves elected on the back of a manifesto they're now turning their backs on.

Corbyn was clear prior to the election that Labour upheld the Leave result of the referendum and that Brexit meant leaving the Single Market. That was Labour's manifesto position. Yes they then fudged it a bit talking about 'retaining the benefits' of the Single Market and you had some Labour MPs campaigning on upholding the Leave result and some on Remain and winning their seats partly on those positions. So yesterday's mess was inevitable.

A vote for Remain should have gone to the Lib Dems.

I don't like Corbyn and as a Leaver voted Conservative for the first time due to their clear and realistic position on Brexit but it's not correct to say Corbyn U-turned.

It's the Labour MPs who campaigned on a Remain/stay in the Single Market ticket knowing that wasn't their party's position who you should take issue with.

To me the only fully anti Brexit party at the election was LibDem.

There was a similar LAbour confusion in Scotland over their position on a quick revisit to an independence referendum.
