AIBU?

To go to A&E...

I think I have burnt or scratched my throat. I got a hot chip stuck in there for a few seconds this lunchtime and it hurts like hell. It's very difficult to swallow and my mouth keeps filling up with saliva. My breathing feels a bit shallow but I don't know if that's just panic or not...

OOH GP service? Or A&E? Or just ice or something?

If you actually can't breathe then A and E wouldn't be unreasonable. But if you're just uncomfortable and panicky then A and E may be an overreaction.
Doyou have any Diflam or mouthwash that could help numb your throat any?

Call NHS 111 for advice. I don't think anyone can advise you properly, no matter what their qualifications, from a short description on an internet forum. But it didn't sound like A&E would be necessary. I've no idea what they'd do! Hope you feel better soon

Call 111

It doesn't sound like an emergency in an otherwise healthy adult, but no one on here can say for sure so call the professionals for advice.

Good Luck!

How did it go?

Lovelilies · 29/06/2017 05:36

What did they say ?

Bobbins43 · 29/06/2017 08:15

She was very kind but basically said that NHS 111 shouldn't have referred me to the Out of Hours service and I should have waited and seen my own GP. And that she wasn't an ENT specialist and couldn't see into my throat. But to have plenty of ice water and go and see the doctor if it isn't better in a few days.

How lovely you all are for asking!

I think I possibly panicked a little last night. It's still painful and I still feel like I have something stuck in there but I am going to guzzle the ice water and see how we go

Thanks for asking after me x

Also take ibuprofen as it's an anti inflammatory. Your throat will have been scalded by the chip and will have inflammation. Must have been scary when it stuck! Hope you feel better soon.

111 unfortunately tend to be over cautious (understandably), but as an ex A+E worker it is very frustrating when they tell everyone to come in. I think their system needs reevaluating!
Glad you're feeling better though OP :)

I'm allergic to ibuprofen, sadly. Ironically, it makes my throat close up :)
