To think some people over eat on fruit and veg

To think some people probably over eat on fruit and veg especially when diets allow unlimited veg obviously it's healthy for you but more veg just means more calories having Pizza for dinner then adding a salad to be healthy is just adding more calories should be lesss pizza and then some veg

Have you looked up how many calories are in a green leaf salad, or a bag of steamed veg?
If someone is overweight, it isn't plain salad or veg that's doing it.
What motivated you to post on this?

Ah I see your second post you are dieting yourself. Your body needs healthy food to get adequate nutrition. You should not limit veg in an attempt to lose weight. Fruit has more sugar so needs to be monitored a bit more carefully, but still vital to a healthy diet.

Chinese government recommends 17 portions of fruit and veg a day, its not the fruit and veg making people fat its what they have with it

What? Do you understand the concept of dieting? Replacing excess calorie rich foods with fruit veg and salad. You really need to learn the basics of how this works.

Have you deliberately just discounted all of the health benefits for eating veggies to justify additional calories on pizza?

A 100g bag of baby spinach has around 10cals. I don't think even Popeye could overeat salad.

What "snacks" did you eat? Might have been better to just have the carrot sticks.

Eat a massive salad first and then you'll only have room for a little bit of pizza.

Apparently 2.5kg of carrots is 1000 cals. So yes, if you eat 5 large bags of carrots cut into batons you'll bugger up your diet.

And probably turn orange from the betacarotene.

The point of lots of veg in the diet that it's relatively low on calories and is filling. So your body is using this calories to digest the food and not laying down fat, plus you're full and not likely to then go and eat crap like pizza.

OP, it's not the calories from fruit and veg that makes humans fat, it's the high fat, high carb stuff.

Have a look on the slimming world website about food optimising about how it all works.

Adding salad or vegetables to anything really isn't going to add calories.

However, anyone trying to lose weight would definitely be better off not eating pizza or most snack foods but piling up the vegetables.

So
a whole bag of mixed salad from the supermarket - 20-50 calories

Medium apple - 70-80 calories each

One slice of Pizza Hut pizza - 200-300 calories

So which will help you lose weight?

Salad is only more calories if there's loads of full fat dressing on it. Lettuce and cucumber are mostly made up of water, virtually no calories. Sounds like you don't understand nutrition too well.

HolgerDanske · 25/06/2017 18:41

No. Most people who try to be 'healthy' but don't understand nutrition are much more likely to vastly undereat on vegetables and vastly overeat on fruit.

You can't really over eat vegetables!

You aren't supposed to add vegetable or fruit to balance out the unhealthy snacks you ate, you're supposed to replace the unhealthy snacks with the fruit and vegetables.

I see what you're saying.

Like people saying that they are 'making healthier choices' by still eating a whole pizza AND a salad, rather than eating half the pizza and adding more salad.

As if by adding fruit and veg to bad choices somehow makes them healthier. And then they wonder why 'eating fruit and vegetables' hasn't made them thinner.

I do think there are people out there who think like this by the way.

And yes you're right, you need to eat less pizza and then add more veg!

CherieBabySpliffUp · 25/06/2017 18:43

The point is to have a smaller slice of pizza if you are also having salad with it

You can't eat too much fruit and veg
You can eat too much processed unhealthy crap

The kind of salad I'd have with an otherwise junky meal would only be about 20-30 calories. Green leafy veg with Apple cider vinegar dressing. If your salad is drowning in creamy dressing and bacon, then yes that would be a problem, but surely everyone's past thinking that type of mayo delivery system is healthy.

Even if the green salad was the thing that took me over my daily allowance, it's not going to make me fat, and I'd rather have the extra nutrients. If you're that worried about it jog on the spot for a few minutes to burn it off.

If poster means that people are adding salad and veg and not cutting down the other stuff then I kind of get it.

Although it isn't the salad / veg that is the issue.

What did you snack on OP? Other than carrot sticks?

We do need a certain amount of protein which you won't get from a diet of salad.

I am checking on the claim that Japan (not China as above) really promotes 17 portions of F+V a day.

OlennasWimple · 25/06/2017 19:03

17 portions?! How on earth are we supposed to do that?

Maybe it was 7 - I've seen posters for 7 a day

You can't overeat on leafy vegetables. It is just not possible. They do not have any calories. With some vegetables, the energy you invest in chopping and eating them is more than the energy you get from them!

Even with root vegetables like carrots, you can't add a significant amount of calories to your diet by eating them, because you're full before you get the normal calories for a meal.

Adding bananas to your normal diet is probably not going to make you lose weight, but with vegetable, I really don't see the problem.

Just eat the vegetables first, then eat pizza until you are not hungry anymore, and put the rest of the pizza in the fridge.

If poster means that people are adding salad and veg and not cutting down the other stuff then I kind of get it.

To be honest, I doubt that is possible, even.
Unless you eat the pizza first and then force yourself to swallow the vegetables ... veggies take up space in your stomach that means that less pizza fits in. You can't just double the volume of what you eat, surely?
