AIBU?

To want a film I don't feel comfortable with, turned off?

Knightly · 24/06/2017 21:44

DH and I were just casually sitting, flicking through channels. He stopped on one film, no idea what it's called, but it had already started in full swing.

I didn't have a clue to the story line and neither did DH so not able to fill me in. He said he knew roughly he thought and her identity was different and she was in hospital.

Next thing I know a woman has woken up in a hospital gown screaming and looking at her hands.

Then some nurse brings in this bloke who has paid to have sex (rape), with her. Nurse was under impression she was still knocked out. Nurse leaves and when rapist gets to it, she bites his tongue off.

I said "DH, I don't feel comfortable with this. Can you turn it off?"

"No, ffs"

I said "Well I am leaving the room then because I feel uncomfortable".

"Fuck sake. Fine! I'll turn it off"

I said "Don't worry, I'm going anyway due to the way you're speaking to me".

He said "Well no, it's just always about what you want".

Was I being unreasonable here? It didn't help that I didn't know the story line, so essentially film was just graphic scenes with no plot to me.

Also, anyone know what film it is? Is on now.

What channel is it on?

Icanseethepigeon · 24/06/2017 21:47

It's Kill Bill vol 1 - very violent by I do truly love it. It has to be right for you though. It's a true Tarantino classic.

ImLizawithaZ · 24/06/2017 21:47

Kill Bill

cushioncovers · 24/06/2017 21:47

Oh ok

Gemini69 · 24/06/2017 21:48

Kill Bill... Uma Thurman...

brilliant film... lots a gore x

SomeKnobend · 24/06/2017 21:48

yanbu

ImLizawithaZ · 24/06/2017 21:49

Every time my ex would watch it I would complain and leave the room, then one night I watched it and absolutely loved it! Second one isn't as violent and is even better.

Patriciathestripper1 · 24/06/2017 21:49

Yes kill bill. Very violent

Knightly · 24/06/2017 21:49

I may have been able to go with it if I knew what was going on from the start, if you see what I mean?

But when someone starts a film in the middle of the plot, it's confusing.

I'm not sure on channel. Sorry Sad

Feel quite sad that I'm so funny about scenes like that, I just felt so uncomfortable and wanted to get away

Kill Bill vol 1. Love that movie. Sounds like you aren't a Tarantino fan. Grin

To be fair you have watched the scene out of context.

AwfulSomething · 24/06/2017 21:51

It's a violent film but a classic! My kinda film, not sure I understand people who react badly to film/tv but I try to respect their feelings.

Italiangreyhound · 24/06/2017 21:51

Fuck me it sounds awful. no wonder you didn't want to watch it.

I guess your husband is not very sensitive to you or your feelings. I'd be livid.

It's not OK to expect you to watch a film about rape, or to complain when you want to turn it off. Does he normally care about your feelings?

Newjob12345 · 24/06/2017 21:52

It is very violent and I wouldn't want to watch it if I wasn't in the mood, or part way through.

It is a very good film though if you can focus on the story.

Knightly · 24/06/2017 21:52

Italian He's usually fine but I think he got frustrated.

He wasn't that engrossed though, he was on his phone so hardly itching to see it and who the fuck starts a film when it's already started

Knightly, I'm not a Tarantino fan either, watched most of Django Unchained as it has a brill storyline then it just got gorier and gorier and I had to go to bed so if Kill Bill is anything like that it wouldn't have helped seeing it from the start!

SaucyJack · 24/06/2017 21:54

Yeah, YABU.

Why didn't you just go and read in your room (or whatevs) without making a fuss?

Bumdishcloths · 24/06/2017 21:55

It seems like a slightly childish reaction - "I don't like this so you can't watch it either" - and as you've said, you had no idea of the storyline. As it happens it's a smashing film.

Italiangreyhound · 24/06/2017 21:55

"Feel quite sad that I'm so funny about scenes like that, I just felt so uncomfortable and wanted to get away"

Don;t feel sad, that is how you are. I can't watch rape scenes, and have no desire to. I've not been raped, but millions of women are, so why would I want to watch it!

AwfulSomething "...not sure I understand people who react badly to film/tv but I try to respect their feelings."

I wonder if it is because some people are quite sensitive, or very empathetic and cannot get beyond what is happening and cannot simply say it is not real. Because although it is not real in that instance with those actors, it is real for some people.

The fact you respect people's feelings is good.

Knightly · 24/06/2017 21:55

Saucy We were in our room. It was sort of wind down time, it's not exactly early in the day.

I would have got a similar reaction if I got up to leave anyway

I am the same OP. I love Tarantino films but have deliberately never watched it as I couldn't cope with the rape scene.

I am also sensitive to other stuff. Ww1/ww2 documentaries leave me absolutely cold. Gang land style films. Anything featuring rape or sexual violence. Anything with kids getting harmed. Especially out of context like that.

Yanbu and your dp should have turned it over.

Knightly · 24/06/2017 21:57

I was sexually abused at age 4.

Maybe that's why. I'm usually fine with rape scenes but I have to watch the film properly if you see what I mean?

A rape scene suddenly appearing and a woman is distress is quite unnerving to me out of nowhere

We have this problem at home, we'll not problem as such but I won't watch anything with graphic sex scenes in, it makes me uncomfortable and I don't think it's necessary to tell a decent story. (yes I'm a prude and I don't care) DH however doesn't get bothered by it and just skips it to continue watching the film/show, it's not an issue however because I'll just pick up a book or my iPad or listen to music/audiobook.

I am the same ! Anything like that I ask for a channel change . DP knows as I go fucking apeshit

That said that's actually a decent film Blush

JoshLymanJr · 24/06/2017 21:58

It's not OK to expect you to watch a film about rape

Kill Bill is, in no way at all, a film 'about rape'.

Knightly · 24/06/2017 21:59

I don't know the film but I wouldn't have said it is about rape entirely, it's just the scene that I landed on. It hit a nerve

DH got frustrated I suppose
