Personally I think a lot would depend on where the wedding was taking place, when and what the theme was.

For a traditional church wedding absolutely not, but for a hotel with a modern theme, why the heck not?

I suppose it depends on the theme/style of the wedding. It would look out of place in the local church hall with a chicken and chip basket, on the other hand if you are having your reception at an up market venue where guests would be expected to change into evening attire, it is perfectly acceptable.

The reviewer says the wedding was in Long Islabd; many American weddings are black tie. This is a lovely dress for such an event.
