AIBU?

I feel a bit bothered

Today I needed to order something expensive which (for me) does need some faith in the person I'm dealing with's competence.

The guy I was dealing with is I'd guess between 37 & 43, he was slurring his words and sounded a bit drunk. It was clear that he wasn't drunk and I presumed he'd probably had a stroke or similar and concluded the transaction.

After which we got chatting and he told me that he's been in what must have been a very serious RCT and had to learn to talk again after!

I believe that I treated him as I would anyone else and as I expect to be treated by a customer, having a customer facing role that is always my aim.

AIBU to be bothered that he obviously feels the need to explain himself? I mean its 2017, are people still judgemental in that way?

But you judged him to be 'a little drunk' or 'had a stroke'

Why assume we'd all make that connection or need and explanation?

Maybe he likes to talk about it to help others understand him better?

I didn't need an explanation and I didn't judge him, I said he sounded a little drunk but I assumed he wasn't. I simply selected the most familiar reference point to justify why I was assuming he wasn't drunk.

Yes it's entirely plausible that he likes to talk about it and looking at it from another angle I imagine he's rightly proud of what he has achieved in his recovery.

Don't feel pissed that he felt the need to explain his condition to you, that's his prerogative. The fact you mention it being a high value transaction etc frankly speaks loudly of your faith in his competence tbh, no matter what your reasoning for starting the thread.

Huh? Confused

he was slurring his words and sounded a bit drunk. It was clear that he wasn't drunk and I presumed he'd probably had a stroke or similar and concluded the transaction.

AIBU to be bothered that he obviously feels the need to explain himself?

But you (and obviously other people) are the reason he feels he needs to explain himself Confused

So yes, YABVU indeed.

I think that you probably were perfectly pleasant towards him and he felt comfortable disclosing rather than having to justify.

I think I know what you mean OP. On occasion I also slur when speaking and sometimes can't find the words I want to say. Anyone who doesn't know me might think I've had a few, when actually I have have degenerative brain disease. I used to carry a card around with me declaring this - so I wouldn't get accidentally arrested or something - but I lost it. I used to be concerned about what other people thought, but not so much now Smile

There was a bloke at my old university who used to hand out cards explaining his slurred speech and the fact that he was returning to college.

Good for him as us very young (at the time) female students would be wary of a seemingly drunk older bloke in the union in the middle of the day. Maybe it was you @TheClaws Grin
