AIBU to expect parents not to drink at sports day?!?!

Have just returned from a very hot primary school sports day. A group of parents decided to crack open a few cold cans of pimms at about 11am. AIBU to think that this is totally out of order at a primary school sports day? I mean I know it's not cans of super brew but still I would never dream of watching my little ones in the sack race while getting sloshed in the sun! Would love to hear other opinions on this.

If I drank during the day in this heat I would be in no fit state to take care of my kid after school! And I drive too. Would never drink and drive!
Is the school even allowed to have alcohol consumed in the premises during the day?!

PTA runs a Pimms tent at ours!

No one gets sloshed. Some people have a couple with a picnic.

YANBU but you'll be told YABU here. All the parents at my DD's old school did it...wine though mainly. It was a very "naice" school and I got the feeling that just because most of the parents were professionals that they felt they could get pissed at sports day with no fear of judgement.

Had they been drinking Stella I bet the HT would have said something.

When my girls were at primary school they'd be bottled Beer for sale as well as a Pimms tent. Was a good money spinner for the PTA

Our school had beer, wine and Pimms available for prize-giving, sports day and summer fetes. The school was in the middle of nowhere so nobody had more than one or two.

I have been to a lot of sweltering primary sports days and never seen anyone openly drinking alcohol. I wouldn't think it was ok.

I went to my goddaughters sports day last year and they had beer and wine for sale, never seen that before, but no one got really drunk, I quite liked the atmosphere felt very picnicy

I honestly hate the culture of alcohol being at EVERY single social event. It's an unhealthy habit and not one I want my children to be exposed to.

Alcohol isn't drugs I know...but it's no good for you and it causes many social and domestic problems.

YANBU - I don't think its ok, especially not at that time in the morning, in front of kids.

I couldn't drink during the day and then be responsible for looking after children when they finish school. I'd be asleep after 1 beverage!

I can understand how its a big moneyspinner for PTAs (our school had a cheese and wine evening last year) and is more enticing than a naff old raffle, but personally I don't feel the need to have booze with a sports day. Although at ours there was a mum and dads race...I think a sozzled parents race would have been quite amusing.

As someone said, if parents had turned up with cans of Stella or special brew it might have been a different story.

I'd be appalled. It's not as though anyone would be fine with the teachers joining in. It sends a pretty shitty message to the kids. And frankly it doesn't matter what they're drinking. Alcholism is ugly. Children shouldn't have to be embarrassed by adults.

I disagree. Why does alcohol at all events bother you, or affect anyone else. If you want to drink and I don't, both are totally fine.

surely you realise that in the UK every event has to be accompanied by copious amounts of alcohol - people in UK can't enjoy themselves without alcohol.

How do you know they will be getting sloshed as you put it?
If they want to enjoy a drink in the sunshine, why not?
I enjoy a few drinks every day. I don't get drunk or even tipsy. What's the harm?
I think you sound quite judgemental. Everyone can handle drink differently.

I don't think it's a healthy impression for our children to show them as adults you can't possibly meet up with other adults without consuming alcohol.

Organise something else that's adults only if you want to use the 'raise money for the PTA' slant.
