AIBU?

To breastfeed in front of my sisters niece?

My sister brought her 5 year old niece (no blood relation to me) over to stay a few weeks ago and I explained that my LO was breastfed and that means that Auntie uses her boobies to make milk for the baby.

My sister was great and helped explain what I was doing and why I was doing it. Also explained that "that's why women have boobies" and that they were to feed baby

She seemed fine with it but when she got home she mentioned it to her dad and he hit the roof! Said it's not right and that i shouldn't be doing it in front of a child Hmm
And that we aren't related so it was wrong!

Now I don't want to open up a debate about breastfeeding in public - this isn't something I've done yet as I haven't built up the nerve (but I think those that do are amazing)

I was doing this in my own home, which in my head was fine and was able to explain fully... how would you /your OH feel if someone not related to you breastfeed in front of your child?

The mans an idiot.

All small children I have fed in front of have asked what I'm doing, I've explained and we've moved on. No drama.

With the notable exception of my cousins child who asked me "albums, why is DS blowing up your boobies".

If he doesn't want his child to see a baby being breastfed, he shouldn't let his child leave the house. Obviously that is abusive so I don't suggest he actually does this, but this is in no way your issue, it's his. What a weirdo.

His problem. Don't try to persaude him. Or really engage she could spot a baby being fed in any coffee shop.

I would tell him to look after his own fecking kid and never take her out.

He needs to buck up his ideas - prat.

You did nothing wrong. Well done for doing something utterly normal.
Gawd, society's relationship to BFing is so fucked up!

He's got some weird ideas about breastfeeding which are entirely his issue. Ignore it and don't worry about it.

Women breastfeed everywhere, I couldn't care less if my children saw another woman breastfeeding her child because it's totally normal.

Children tend to be fascinated by breastfeeding. Her husband is a massive tool. But he's not your problem. Don't let it bother you.

Thanks for your replies

I have used the "argument" that she could see a baby being breastfed anywhere in public and actually it's better to be able to explain.

He said that in those situations she would be able to leave but as she was staying at my house I was basically forcing her to watch.

Oh, rubbish.

Don't engage.
Yes, children are often fascinated by BFing but equally lose all interest when it is presented as normal.

What an idiot! He clearly sees breast feeding as something sexual which is why he won't be wanting his daughter witnessing it. How pathetic!

Ask him what he thinks boobs are for?!
He's teaching his poor daughter the totally wrong things about her own body by reacting like this. What a wanker.
Ofc you should feed your baby ... what were you supposed to do? Just bottle feed while she was there? Ffs men.

He's being a fucking weirdo, tell him to stop sexualising breastfeeding because that's what he's doing it's fucking perverted and I feel sorry for the little girl growing up with a sick prick of a dad 🤢

My cousin was in hysterics, while trying to explain what I was actually doing.

Then it all got a bit confused Ashe was labouring under the misapprehension that cows milk cones from their bottoms. He lives next to a dairy farm, and I suppose udders are further down the body?

Oh he's being a prize twat. There's nothing wrong with breastfeeding, it's normal, so there's nothing to worry about if she did see you feeding.

The idea you were forcing her to watch is ridiculous, as if she couldn't play somewhere else or not look if she happened to find it uncomfortable. Which she probably didn't, being 5!

I wouldn't engage with it. I'd just say that breastfeeding is normal and not anything that needs to be hidden from children, and then keep repeating that if he brings it up again.

Then tell him not to let her come again, if he feels that strongly about it. But tell him he is an idiot too.

Why is he getting angry at you breast feeding, in your own home, in front of a child.

He sounds like some kind of pervert to be honest, and I would make it clear you will not have someone act like feeding your baby is dirty and if he persists he can fuck off.

YANBU! It's important to normalise breastfeeding for the next generation.
