... to lament that husband has bought Elmlea?

I put cream on the shopping list.

He bought Elmlea and told me, 'It's the only cream they had.'

I pointed out that although it might be in a pot like cream, it was not cream. And the information on the side described it as 'a blend of buttermilk and vegetable oil.'

oh! Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeurgh!

LTB! He bought that cos it's cheap!

I'd make him go back and get real cream!!

user1471517900 Wed 07-Jun-17 16:19:21

So he should have bought nothing?

I prefer it for cakes as it pipes better and cakes can then stay out of the fridge.

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty Wed 07-Jun-17 16:23:20

Yuck. That stuff is Satan's own jizz. Have my first ever LTB.

FlyingElbows Wed 07-Jun-17 16:23:38

Now that really is a middle class food disaster! It's taken the best part if 20 years to cure Mr Elbows of the belief that Elmlea or Dream Topping (can you even still buy that?) are just the same as actual cream.

Will it make spaghetti carbonara taste disgusting?

CaulkheadUpNorf Wed 07-Jun-17 16:24:57

I like it in carbonara.

CrispPacket Wed 07-Jun-17 16:25:17

I thought it was cream!!! Whoops. Ha I love it blush

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty Wed 07-Jun-17 16:26:22

It might be okay. It might give it a bit of a horrid oily "mouth-feel."
boaks at own use of the term mouth-feel

HeyRoly Wed 07-Jun-17 16:26:31

My parents always buy Elmlea. They think of it as "healthier". I'd rather go without, personally.

SerfTerf Wed 07-Jun-17 16:27:39

Bleurgh. Really carb-laden too.

weebarra Wed 07-Jun-17 16:27:59

YABU for putting cream (or Elmlea) in carbonara in the first place!

ElinorRigby Wed 07-Jun-17 16:36:40

The weird thing is that husband is a food snob. But he's also not terribly observant in supermarkets...

Fruitcocktail6 Wed 07-Jun-17 16:38:50

Do you put cream in a carbonara?

SerfTerf Wed 07-Jun-17 16:39:25

When DH did the exact same thing, I had Abbey hard time persuading him that it WASN'T cream. It looked like cream, it was packaged like cream it was sold next to the cream. He just couldn't quite compute it.

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty Wed 07-Jun-17 16:40:52

Well that's a whole other AIBU isn't it? Some people would say you're being very unreasonable in using cream in carbonara at all.
(Not me.)

Piratesandpants Wed 07-Jun-17 16:42:15

Foul. LTB.

MintyChops Wed 07-Jun-17 16:46:39

Definitely LTB.

Syc4moreTrees Wed 07-Jun-17 16:47:34

My DM always hated when we bought Elmlea but i had no idea it wasn't cream?! Everyday is a school day

SueDeNimmity Wed 07-Jun-17 16:48:16

oh god, my exMIL insisted on buying that too. It's vile.

TheLegendOfBeans Wed 07-Jun-17 16:49:29

Oh my god I never knew Elmlea was a "cream imposter"

This has blown my doors of perception right off their hinges

ElinorRigby Wed 07-Jun-17 16:49:31

It looked like cream, it was packaged like cream it was sold next to the cream. He just couldn't quite compute it.

So you're married to him, as well.

On further examination he has also not bought 5 little cartons of the pure orange juice we always get. He has bought 5 cartons of vile sweetened orange squash drink.

VanillaSugar Wed 07-Jun-17 16:52:03

My DH bought Elmlea when I'd asked for cream and he was most affonted when I screeched in horror. He genuinely thought it was cream.
