To be sick of hearing about how bad the world is 'these days'?

Following another terrorist attack FB is rife with lots of anti Muslim posts (that's another thread) and also lots of 'what's the world coming to these days?'

Is it just me or has terrorism been around for hundreds or thousands of years and been committed by all races/nations etc? Terrorism is not a new thing, is it?

I agree... the world has never been a peaceful place. Throughout history it was far, far more violent and brutal.

It just seems more apparent "these days" because it's easier to report on with modern technology and social media means everyone hears about it all the time. But you're right, terrorism has been happening since forever.

With the IRA there was usually a warning, a sort of "gentleman's agreement" terrorism. The guerrilla terrorism of the Jihadi branch of Islam is another level altogether..

I think as another poster pointed out, social media has a lot to answer for. I do often wonder how we would have coped as a species throughout world wars one and two if we had social media, whether we would have been so resilient and adopted a 'keep calm and carry on' attitude or posing filtered selfies against the rubble and lamenting on Twitter.

YANBU. I remember doing shop work as a teenager and having to be mindful of potential Irish troubles related bomb stuff. Or people pretending to be Irish bomb people (frequent) and putting razor blades etc in things we had to check. Sexual assault/abuse was generally accepted as kids weren't taught what was 'wrong'. Knife crime was still a major issue back then. There are different 'bogeymen' but I don't think we are any less safe than we were back then.

Christ! Yanbu i am sick fed up of it, people seem to think everything was rosy years ago,
As for the IRA the warnings weren't warnings to help people, there was nothing gentlemanly about it, they did it so the news cameras had time to get there. No point in bombing something if it couldn't be on the 6 o'clock news.
With 24 hour news programs and camera phones there is no need any more.

This is crap and it's offensive crap. The IRA sometimes gave warnings but often didn't. They killed hundreds of people in bombs, and hundreds more by shooting them. They weren't friendly cuddly terrorists who didn't really mean to harm anyone. Nor were loyalist terrorists. They set out to kill people, and they succeeded.

Warnings?
I remember one lovely Christmas Eve visiting family in N Ireland. A warning came on that some terrorist group had claimed there was a bomb under the car of (I think) a prison officer or police officer. Imagine knowing that could be a member of your family? Gentlemen's agreement? No.

Apologies for offence caused, no doubt there were rogue elements but in the main the IRA played by some sort of rules and their endgame was at least pindownable and not some amorphous "Islamic caliphate" which has no end and no beginning.

That didn't make any difference to those that were killed and maimed. Car bombs. Bombs in trash bins. Shootings. Kidnappings. Knee-capping.

Bloody hell. The memories are coming back.

Boswellox rubbish. 10 dead 50 wounded blowing up a chip shop, leading to a totally predictable wave of retaliation including 8 innocent people gunned to death in a pub. My part time job at 16 involved searching floor stock for hidden firebomb ffs. Nothing gentlemanly about it

What has happened in the U.K. is terrible, but there have been terrible things going on for years all over the world at a much higher frequency.
Also fed up with hearing things like 'attacking our way of life'. As if that's the sole reason this shit keeps happening!

I keep thinking of my gps living through WWII. Imagining the planes flying over London and dropping bombs, for weeks and months on end. Things have always been shit.

I grew up with terrorism in and out of Northern Ireland - it feels to me like there's no difference really other that the 24/7 news and social media coverage. The world has always had issues, it's no worse now than it ever was.

The fact that they had an actual aim makes no difference at all to the people who are very dead because of them. Murders weren't carried out by rogue elements Your second post is even more hurtful to victims than your first.

The whole thing does my head in on 2016 697 people died due to homicide alone, that is more than terrosism in our country in 10 years.
16 young people have been stabbed recently on london streets.
Why is it only the terrorist people are scared off !
One guy on my facebook literally posts every 2 sec updates and rants about what is going on.

Earlier he posted,
When I was school I was learning this and that now my daughter will have to learn how to protect her self from bombs.

He was at school in the 80's statisically since the year 2000 less people have died in this country theough terrorism than in the 80's

Indeed, and still 100 women a year are killed by partners and ex-partners, still more than have been killed by terrorists in the U.K.

People who have been personally affected will always have their own very specific take on things, completely understandably, and I wouldn't dare to criticise.
