How the hell can we stop this?

Yup, am with you, the most depressing aspect of this is that it seems there's no solution, I can't imagine how this can ever be fixed, truly would like to gather up my loved ones and go to a country less politically hot and just live a quiet life

I've always sort of thought it was a reaction to foreign policy. Now I think they just hate us. It's always bars, concerts.

I don't know how we can stop this.

I also don't know what winning looks like from their point of view.

I'm sure that we were warned / it was discussed in the news that ISIS would try and increase their attacks in the west. This is because they have largely been defeated in the Middle East.

GettingScaredNow · 04/06/2017 07:43

It can never be 'won'.
Until the west give in and live in such a way that is acceptable to the extremists. And even then the ones who do these things see it as god given and their duty.
It will never end.

They're not winning though. They haven't achieved their ultimate aims even in Middle East.

They're not winning, because Britain is no nearer to becoming an Islamic state, or part of a world wide caliphate. That is their goal.
I know this sounds really horrible and callous, but only a tiny number of people have been killed in terror attacks in the UK.
We have to keep going on because we have no choice. What will change - what is already changing - is our belief in a 'charmed' existence, where we have felt as if things like this happen in other countries and not to us. Death can come at any moment, to all of us.
This does not reflect on the individual loss suffered last night, or in any other terrorist incident. Rest in peace to all the victims, and condolences to their loved ones.As always.

They are winning. They are terrifying people and noone has a fucking clue how to deal with it. The terrorists last night won. They set out to kill people, cause terror and presumably end up as martyrs. Tick, tick, tick.

There isn't anything most of the general public can do, except keep living your life.

If you suspect someone has been radicalised report it to the police so info can be passed on. Terror attacks are prevented this way. Decent funding for the police helps too.

Be inclusive to people you think may be at risk of radicalisation. Make it harder for the terrorists to fuck with their heads and convince them terrorism is the right way.

Maybe winning is the wrong word but they're having an impact, that can't be denied, prob be some incident of horror on polling day too, I think for 'them' as long as they're disrupting in the most extreme way possible they feel victorious and i think they will want this heightened sense of fear created by regular attacks to continue as long as possible, with others joining the momentum possibly

They are winning!!!! This is happening time and time again and all we can come up with is 'our emergency services are great and train every day for this' all well and good but when will something happen to try and put a stop to this!!!!

Report
DoctorDonnaNoble · 04/06/2017 07:51

No, that isn't their goal. Their goal is an extremist world wide caliphate loosely based on an interpretation of Islam and Muslim history.
I lost a friend in Bataclan. His family now fundraise for music based inclusion projects. His legacy lives on. They lose.

Who is the 'they' in this attack? The police haven't said who was responsible for the London attack yet. It's a bit early to jump to conclusions about isis isn't it.

When will we start dealing with the real threat?

The people who have our blood on their hands, when they are supposed to be protecting us.

Saudi is funding the spread of extremism around the world.

You want to know how someone seemingly normal could do this to another human being?

Schools and mosques are being funded that teach some young Muslim children that we are little more than beasts to be destroyed. Enemies who are beneath them.

And instead of helping us, and these innocent children who are being radicalised, our governments say nothing. Do nothing.

Because money is more important to them then keeping us safe. That is the bottom line.

And NOTHING will change. No flowers, candles, or internment will work.

Not until the people of this country and others start getting angry at the right people.

When I hear "we won't let them win" I now think, Hallo! They are winning!

I think the media need to have a good look at how they report these incidents.
What those men did last night was awful but it is now the media who are spreading the terror through sensationalist reporting and media outlets trying to out do each other by reporting each grizzly detail. This also encourages other sick minded terrorists because in their mind it makes what these men have done seem glamorous.

Well, our government has the PREVENT strategy aimed squarely at antiradicalisation but it's upsetting plenty of Muslim organisations

This, perhaps especially the last paragraph, in a time of resurgent xenophobia and suspicion.

They are not 'winning'. I am a Londoner and won't change my behaviour one bit. The media doesn't help by scaremongering.

@bruffian it is too early to talk about Isis. They don't organise these attacks like the terrorists in NI or Al Qaeda did. They radicalise and make suggestions of possible things to do. This makes intelligence a hell of a lot harder actually.

I agree these attacks can't not be reported but I wonder about avoiding the use of the term 'terror'. Perhaps describing the incidents as 'multiple murders', which is, after all, what they are.

Report
bruffian · 04/06/2017 07:58

Well if you live in London you can't change your behaviour. Changing your behaviour can't help as the attacks are so random.

The prevent strategy is offensive and useless.

They won't tackle the real source, the issue of the Saudi finding, because it would cost them money.
