my dd 2.5 calls everything by their sounds

cow: mooo
sheep: baaaa
boat: aaaaah (as in pirate)
bus: beep
train: choo choo
cat: owow (as in meow)

is this normal?

Depends if thats how you have been teaching her words.

My toddler went through that stage - as in, he didn't call animals their names for ages but by their sounds, always saying "Meow" at a picture of a cat despite us of course telling him it was a cat. The names came later. So I'd say it was perfectly normal, but you could always self refer to a speech therapy drop in if your county/borough offers this - to put your mind at rest.

DS did this for a while probably up until he was around your DD's age.
He now uses the correct words, so I wouldn't think it's anything to worry about.

she has 30 words from what i just listed if you include those here.

they all sound very similiar and she uses the same word for lots like baubau is bubble or ball or water and ow is ow or cat

she does juju for a drink and rubs her belly for food

It's normal to use sounds like these in early speech development but as your DC is 2.5 I would run it by a HV. It could be mild speech delay.

It's totally normal.

An idea: don't correct her, just recast what's she saying

Her: moooo
You: yes, I can see the cow too!

Kind of takes away the negativity from the word cow etc.

Agree that it's a normal stage, but not necessarily normal to be doing it at 2.5 - however I'm only going on my DD and a health visitor will know what's a usual age range for each stage of development.

Also agree with moomin - try to be positive - Ie

You: yes well done - that's a cow and they say moo.

I would mention it to HV or family physician at any upcoming appointment. I'm aware there is a huge range to speech development but what you describe seems more in keeping with a much younger age group.

she goes to childminders and/or toddler groups daily and english is the only languagre.

she can say 'mama' very rarely she will say 'mummy' and she has just figured she can stick no in front of most things but she will never say 'no mama' its 'no ma'

I would also ask the HV or GP for a referral to get her speech assesed at this point OP. She may have a sudden surge forward yet but if not then at least she will be on waiting list....the wait can be long in some areas.

It's "ok" in the fact that she's communicating OP but it does sound as though she's slightly "behind" expected developmental levels in so far as speech is concerned.

I'd say she's maybe a little behind? But really really don't think it's anything to worry about as she IS speaking and communicating. My 2.5yr old is using full sentences, I don't think she's ahead but might be wrong. She'd say things like 'where are you going mummy?' and 'no! I like pasta. Want pasta for my dinner'.

My DS has just turned 2 and he will make the noise followed by the word e.g. moo cow or baa baa sheep. He doesn't say cat he says miaow miaow, and for dog he says doggie. It completely mimics the way i have taught him words. I might be wrong but I think he is a good talker, not anything advanced but he's very chatty and he tries hard with words. I have a friend with a 3 year old who has speech therapy - altho he talks a lot you can't make out the words.

I asked the HV this but my DD was younger (about 22 months). She said it was fine, especially if they recognise the actual name (e.g. Point to the picture of the cat when you say cat). But it may be an idea to raise it with yours as your DD is a bit older.

If you're on Facebook the group 'let's talk infant and toddler development' is brilliant. Many of the members are speech and language professionals and there are loads of ideas on there. I would definitely speak to your HV too but I know referrals can take a long time.

She may be behind but as long as she's progressing at whatever speed and is interacting with words (i.e. pointing at a cow and saying moo) then she's not massively behind.

HV might refer you to a SALT but they won't be that concerned yet. When it gets to 36-48 months, then the SALT might be more bothered and do more intensive sessions.

OP speech regression is also normal at this stage, so if her ability is going forwards or backwards then that's normal. If her ability is stagnating then that's less normal. Either way tell the HV, and you might get a starter appointment with a SALT. It's a stretched service though
