The Handmaid's Tale is coming on Channel 4 at 9.00 tonight?

WellErrr Sun 28-May-17 21:01:57

I've seen it mentioned quite a bit - what's it about?

DorisMcSweeney Sun 28-May-17 21:02:46

It's a rom-com set in America in the future.

Highalert Sun 28-May-17 21:03:23

I read the book years ago. I don't really like TV adaptations of books. They are always disappointing.

Willowkins Sun 28-May-17 21:08:24

Sorry but a rom-com? I saw the film and it's grim - women in a militaristic future are categorised as wives (the favoured few), prostitutes or potential babymakers (that's who the handmaid is - to begin with anyway). I've recorded and DH is out so I'll be watching it.

Er... it's definitely not a rom com.

It's about a world where women have no rights, basically. I loved the book and am really looking forward to watching it! Fingers crossed they don't ruin it, reviews are all good.

Harvey246 Sun 28-May-17 21:12:32

Rom-com grin

Moanyoldcow Sun 28-May-17 21:12:53

Rom-com??! Fuck me - I must've read a different book!!

Schlobbob Sun 28-May-17 21:13:43

I studied the book for A Level and really enjoyed it and read good reviews of the series. Really looking forward to it!

Tenementfunster Sun 28-May-17 21:13:51

Second time you made me laugh today, Doris grin

elQuintoConyo Sun 28-May-17 21:14:55

Jean Rhys wrote the follow up: Handmaid's Knee.

SmilingButClueless Sun 28-May-17 21:16:27

Ah, that explains my English Lit grade. I thought it was a dystopian vision of a post-feminist future. I'd completely missed the romantic comedy elements.

Theresnonamesleft Sun 28-May-17 21:16:54

Haha rom-com. Although tbh not surprised considering the amount of people think that 50 shades of shite is romantic.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 Sun 28-May-17 21:19:14

I read quite a bit of the book and enjoyed it but never finished it so don't know how it ends!

I'm still gonna watch the tv show, though.

maras2 Sun 28-May-17 21:21:06

Wonder if offred knows.

DorisMcSweeney Sun 28-May-17 21:23:14

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 the ending is standard Hollywood stuff; the main protagonist, Shirley, realises she is in love with the farm hand, Buster, and they run away together to live happily ever after.

lorelairoryemily Sun 28-May-17 21:27:03

It's neither romantic nor comedic...grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 Sun 28-May-17 21:28:52

DorisMcSweeney I think you're very confused and on the wrong thread.

JamesDelaneysHat Sun 28-May-17 21:30:13

elQuinto grin

slothqueen Sun 28-May-17 21:31:57

grin rom-com. I just spat out my brew.

TinselTwins Sun 28-May-17 21:33:18

I've had it highly recommended but I'm not sure?
I don't stomach shows with sexual violence in them - is it grim/gratuitous?

aliasjoey Sun 28-May-17 21:33:41

It's pretty obvious doris was being ironic...!

Crunchymum Sun 28-May-17 21:34:58

Its one of my favourite books.

HumphreyCobblers Sun 28-May-17 21:35:04

It is really good so far. I love that book.
