AIBU?

To wonder why so much fuss about Prince William going bald?

There seems to be a kind of horrified obsession with this in the media here. I don't quite get it. If you look around a significant number of men including young men go through this so why all the hand-wringing? It can't do the confidence of a young balding man much good to hear and see the massive stick PW has got over this.

It is weird. The DM published a piece of 'news' yesterday that Frank Lampard was going thin on top. Confused

I feel for him a bit because he'd probably not feel able to just say "sod it" and shave his head (as dh has done, and grown a beard, he looks so good).

Interestingly, women are constantly berated for how they look: All. The. Fucking. Time.
I know it's not a competition but in the big scheme of things I'd say he gets off pretty lightly in comparison to how his spouse is constantly picked apart over how she looks.

Either way it is quite an unusual fixation to have. Perhaps it is because it is a change in appearance and in his case a fairly rapid one, but I'd still rather they didn't go on about it the way they do.

I don't know - Same reason as some people seem fixated about his wife's appearance?

Report
Cookingongas · 27/05/2017 14:19

In fairness the media attention his wife gets for having hair, alongside the media attention to his losing it- well, you'd be forgiven for assuming that we are a nation obsessed with hair.

Yanbu- it's so very shallow and pointless

Is the point simply to have a go at and ridicule him? One DM article had hundreds of unflattering pictures of the top of his head and loads and loads of comments about it

I don't get why he can't just have a buzz cut though - why can't he? It seems the obvious thing most men would do.

TBH I don't quite get the whole crescendo of "shave it off" that seems to happen when ever a man is losing his hair. It seems to smack of bullying somehow. A bit like the way the crowd reacted to Les Dennis head shave on Loose Women

It is because he is handsome - or at least he used to be. The papers are disappointed he's not the gorgeous Prince they wanted him to be. And are now berating him for it.

If he looked like Prince Edward, no one would care if he went bald.

And yeah, the attention he gets is but a tiny fraction of the constant scrutiny his wife gets. I hope they can both rise above it.

I don't think he looks ugly without hair at all personally

Because there are thousands of shallow and thick non-entities within our population.

Agree with the last post. I wonder why the press have remained so fixated with Williams hair for so long though? Presumably it will "settle" in its current pattern from now on, and perhaps they will lose interest as it'll no longer be news.

I think it is disgraceful that we may have a slap head as king. We need to keep standards up.

Genuinely would like to know-is the above post a joke?

He can't shave his head (or have a buzz cut) because then he would look like a chav.

I think many people dream of having a king who looks about 25. Impending baldness brings home the fact he'll be ancient by the time he gets to be king.

The thing with Mrs Prince William is that the constant reporting and analysis of her appearance is, on the whole, complimentary. Perhaps even verging on sycophancy. If she was going bald, some empty-headed fashion writer would no doubt hail it as trailblazing. But it ain't allowed for The Prince.

I think it just ages him, especially considering how classically 'dashing' he was only a few years ago. There's been more than one occasion where I've mistaken him for Prince Edward, so can only imagine his father's side has stronger genes in him! He should do as he pleases with his hair though, he always looks highly presentable and as a state representative that's all you ask for Boris.

DorisMcSweeney, I don't know if you're trying to be funny or not, but that was an odd comment either way...

He can't do anything about or seem to care as that would be featured in the DM as:

Royals fuss over hair while immigration soars.

I don't think people are fixated not he baldness but more on the quite obvious absurdity. Don't see many men his age looking like that now. They would all opt for a cut or Rooney style transplant.

He can't because its trivial and frivolous. Its too trivial for him to be allowed to pay attention although with all this "we just like a night in with a curry because we're so normal" he should be allowed to address it.

Bollocks to say he doesn't care, I bet they do talk bout it, she dedicated enough time to her and the children's appearance for it not to be something he's conscious of.

Just imagine the DM uproar if he had a transplant Grin

The press are disappointed as he resembled Diana with his thick blonde hair, now he looks more like Charles.

Report
Aggieisback1 · 27/05/2017 21:03

Yes I think the DM would go into absolute meltdown if he had a hair transplant. There's a sort of sense of anger behind some of the coverage like how dare you look different to how you were supposed to. Wonder what Diana would have made of it all had she lived?

He should get a buzz cut. End of. It would make him look young and modern. I think he looks fine and not in the least bit ugly. Poor guy.
