To take my baby to the walk in centre

Me and my baby (6 months old) were out enjoying the sunshine today. He was topped up with sun cream, kept in the shade and wore a hat. But ever since we got home one of his eyes has seemed red and swollen. In the last hour it's started running as well. I think he might have somehow sunburnt his eye (is this even possible?)
There was around 10 minutes were I held him in my arms looking for his hat that DS (4) had thrown into some trees.

We have a GP appointment tomorrow anyway for his eczema but I think I should take him to out of hours with his eye now. DH making me doubt myself though- calling me precious and ridiculous. Any advice?

Oh it doesn't seem to be hurting him at all.
Walk in centre a long and expensive taxi ride away as DH has had a drink and can't drive us.

To me it sound more like he may have something in his eye? If it's just the one inflamed and streaming?

Could he have got sunscreen in his eye? Either directly or via sweating?

Some sunscreens can make my eyes do that.

If you're in the UK try phoning NHS 24 and ask them? They'll be able to give better advice than any of us :)

But in answer to your question, from what you describe I wouldn't go to OOH with that especially if you have a GP appt tomorrow.

Does he seem in pain?

If he's not in pain or showing any signs of discomfort then it can easily wait til the morning

There is no point. He hasn't burnt his eye in ten minutes although he may have sunburn on his eyelid. It's more likely the sun has irritated his skin as eczema is skin that is highly reactive.

They won't be able to advise you on anything they can't tomorrow. You'll be wasting your time and theirs and your money!

I really don't even know why people are suggesting ring NHS 24. They're always very reactive with babies and this is such a non-issue.

Sounds like suncream in the eye to me. I wouldn't take to the walk in for that. Maybe the GP if it persists.

I just give a clean with some water and cotton wool and that usually helps x

Thank you- the reason I freaked out is my mother was taking about flash burns on the cornea and me having blinded him.

And his eczema is only on his stomach/ arms not his face so don't think it's that.

My "D"M was saying that it was child neglect and social services would be involved. I should have known she was just pressing my buttons (again) thank you.

Also with sunscreen to the eye, could it be that even if the reaction only showed up hours after suncream applied?

Yes Crispy it normally goes over my head but for the last hour she has been messaging me about how social services take sunburn very seriously in babies and how I had neglected my children already by having PND etc.

My DS got a horribly swollen eye. His hands had sunscreen on and he rubbed his eye. He was allergic to it.
Your child won't go blind. Your mother needs to back off and leave you alone.

Prob cream in eye or a reaction to pollen. I get red, watery eyes on holiday - I think it's prob the cream.

How swollen is it? If it's completely swollen shut then definitely go. But if it's more minor just keep an monitoring and maybe try Piriton if it's OK at his age

Minor swelling. Slightly red. Feels warm to touch It's running a lot though.

Piriton is prescription only for under 1's
