Nightmare neighbour and fence

Ndn is on steroids ( for weight training ) and has ( to put it mildly ) anger issues.
When I had my baby ( 3 years ago ) I knocked on his door to ask him to stop his dog from jumping up at the fence as she was ( and still is ) terrified. Got sworn at - told not to come near his effing door ever again. For the last three years I've had to put up with not being able to go in my back garden as my lg is terrified of the dog ( they seem to just let it out when we go out - but that's all I see ) also we have swarms of black flies as they don't clean up after the dog ( and it's constantly running it's arse on the decking - worms?). Anyway have had enough and recently had a six foot fence put up ( at great expense but hey if it solves the problem). Today I heard banging. They have damaged my fence by nailing fairy lights to it and placing the new BBQ against it! FFS am livid. Wwyd?

If the lights are on their side what's the problem? Fairy lights aren't exactly going to bring it down.

But he still sounds like an arse for what it's worth.

I'm not bothered about the fairy lights. It's the damage that he's caused putting them in ( there are now gaps at the top of the fence and panels split )

And am concerned about the BBQ being AGAINST the fence. He's actually built a brick one leaning onto the fence. Surely that's not safe- heat ,/ fire / wood ?

Lean over and remove them. . Drop them in his garden.

Do nothing. Do not give him the rise he so desperately wants. He is not a rational person and you will never get a rational response from him.

The best thing you can do is look happy and smile every time you see him. Then think no more.

You are not legally allowed to do ANYTHING to someone else's fence (even the side that looks like it's yours in your garden). Eg. Put nails in it, grow climbers up it, stick trellis to it, paint it. It is not your property. Obviously nice, normal neighbours do this and it is all fine. Problem neighbours not so much.

They can paint it sky blue pink for all I care. But damaging it,? Aibu?

Fucking hate idiots like that. I eventually moved away from a similar wanker but not before reporting him to RSPCA for animal abuse. I also caused damage but I was so fed up I had to have therapy for PTSD for months.

I read (today, I have my own neighbour probs!) that if the fence is yours and on on your property then anything put into/onto it is classed as criminal damage. Not encouraging you to bring it up though, he sounds like it'd just escalate

The rubbing its bottom scooting dog thing is probably impacted anal glands, which will be very uncomfortable for the dog. Sad

If there's flies from dog poo, I believe you can report it to the council. It might be worth asking them for advice anyway about that and see what they say or have a google. I think it probably falls under environmental health.

I can't imagine having a BBQ next to dog poo like that Confused, it sounds so disgusting.

Sounds awful. Although he shouldn't have done that to the fence and depending on layout the bbq could he a fire hazard, it sounds like if you do something about it you're going to be the one that suffers.

I'm guessing you own your house and moving is not an option?

If so, perhaps you could help him decide to move by making his dog unhappy?? Not sure how effective it would be but I know you can get special boxes that give off a high pitched sound which is uncomfortable for cats and deters them from your garden (it's said to be very effective). Could you look at if there's an option for similar for a dog? Clearly it would need to be something visually discreet/hidden. Maybe you could get a dog whistle that is silent to humans but will make dog unsettled?

Sorry I'm scratching at ideas for you as I feel your pain

Please don't do this. It sounds like the dog has a miserable enough life, owned by a wanker who won't even sort out its anal glands/worms.

Making his dog 'unhappy' won't make him move, it'll probably just make him kick the dog. Hmm

True koala. I care deeply for animals and have stopped my car in the road many a time to rescue them but I've also lived next to nightmare neighbours (who weren't even as bad as this) and I know how depressing and consuming it was
