I still haven't woken up from this weird nightmare. On mumsnet we're all fighting over the scraps both main parties have decided to throw to us while they push on with Brexit unchallenged, without any coherent plan. It's going to cost billions and in the short to medium term leave us all poorer. This at a time when things were just starting to recover after the financial crash. And yet nothing of the good people were promised from brexit (staying in single market, 350 million per week to NHS) are on offer. Only all the shite.

We should just walk away from the E.U. without paying them another penny. We should also bill them for the cost of WWII.

All of that money we give to them can fund our N.H.S and our health and social care.

I find it odd that the Tories have produced a manifesto without one mention of putting that money to good use. So anyone who thinks we should stay can breathe a sigh of relief because I really do not believe that Mrs. May has any intention of taking us out.

Staying in the single market is not viable, nor would it have been a good long term prospect. I genuinely wonder sometimes what goes through people's heads like yours, OP. Is it just chickens running around clucking the same sh*te back and forth obtained from supposedly leftwing media?

Who gives a crap of it leaves some of us poorer for a few more years, we're already on the bones of our arse because of our parents and grandparents shitty generation, when it gives our kids and the majority of the unskilled workforce in the country a better chance of a stable future - that we were supposed to have and never fucking got! Maybe because remainers see that one of the things that made post-war Europe stable WAS the EU. Nobody claimed it was perfect. It will NOT save us money. It's already necessitated an extra government department! It will cost far more than the bus lies said they would give to the NHS.
And if you think the current shower have any intention of helping unskilled labour while they can keep their costs down through non-EU migration you have another think coming!

I agree with the previous poster who said that it will be the younger generations and the poorer people who will take the biggest 'hit' from Brexit. Those of us who are older, already retired and/or have substantial savings will not notice too much difference (financially, at least).

Whatever you think of the EU - and I'm not as much of a fan as some - this is pure fantasy. Which countries do you think are going to do trade deals with us that will actually make us richer? Bear in mind that one of the reasons Britain (London in particular) is currently so attractive to other countries is that it gives them access to the single market.

Is this attitude going to further any understanding of the issue? It is complex. There are huge unknowns either way. Trying to see where we will be better off and where we might be worse off and mitigating for that would be sensible. Looking at what advantages we have out of the EU and trying to build on those would be sensible.

As individuals we are all in different situations and will be differently affected - just as we were by Free Movement, (which was not so great if you were a plumber or a nanny paying UK insurance, van tax etc but which might have been good if you were a business needing cheap labour or a family needing childcare.)

OP might be right - it might all be disastrous and we might all be in deep shit - but on the other hand maybe there are ways of trying to rescue something from it. And maybe we might have been in deeper shit had we stayed. Actually we don't know.

In the meantime fighting over scraps if scraps is what you have is what we have always had to do. It is patronising to treat the poor who are fighting for PIP as irrelevant in this.

The trouble is, it's not as simple as "Once we're out of the EU, we can find new markets." UK industry is deeply enmeshed in the EU. I know not everyone will click on the link, so here's an excerpt:

If there is just one anecdote that succinctly sums up the problems that Brexit and the threat of tariffs pose to the UK car industry, it is this: the story behind the crankshaft used in the BMW Mini, which crosses the Channel three times in a 2,000-mile journey before the finished car rolls off the production line.

A cast of the raw crankshaft – the part of the car that translates the movement of the pistons into the rotational motion required to move the vehicle – is made by a supplier based in France.

From there it is shipped to BMW’s Hams Hall plant in Warwickshire, where it is drilled and milled into shape. When that job is complete, each crankshaft is then sent back across the Channel to Munich, where it inserted into the engine.

From Munich, it is back to the Mini plant in Oxford, where the engine is then “married” with the car.

If the car is to be sold on the continent then the crankshaft, inside the finished motor, will cross the Channel for a fourth time.
