AIBU?

To hate seeing/hearing "only in..."

Not sure if this is just an NI thing or if it happens all over but I keep seeing on FB photographs of things with "only in NI" as the caption. But it is for things that aren't in any way unique to NI. Today's is a photo of a lamb in someone's garden. Pretty sure there are adventurous lambs in other parts of the world. In fact I saw footage of a load of sheep and goats running alongside some marathon runners in Italy the other day. Another recent photo was of a man sunbathing on the roof of his house, again with the caption "only in NI". That cannot seriously be a rare occurrence in the rest of the U.K.?

I don't know why this irritates me so much but I really groan when I see it. I want to type in blocks capitals "THIS IS NOT UNIQUE TO NI" Grin

I'm in a fuggy mood this evening. Grin

YANBU! I find it annoying too. It's just become a 'catch-all phrase' for anything that someone's once seen somewhere! (Like 'you had to be there' which I get irrationally annoyed by too!!)

Must admit, I've never seen anyone sunbathing on the roof of their house! Shock Have you?
misses point of thread

That exact photo annoyed me too. The Kennedys on Neighbours had a pet sheep in their garden ffs.

Yep these annoy me too, they're very rarely actually unique, or particularly funny

I agree!

Also hate people who start a sentence with 'when'. So on fb "when you're stuck at work" or "when a massive spider walks across the lounge"

and what?

This annoys me so much too!

I also hate the "only me" "only I would do this"
A person on my Facebook locked herself out of the house the other day and said "only I would do this" then queue the "omg only you" comments like nope pretty sure that's a very common thing!

anon yes! I find it irritating when people go on about being so "crazy" or "weird" when they're the same as everyone else, with a few quirks like we all have

I've done it! Quite a lot as a child. Less so as an adult as my houses haven't had as easy access to the roof! Grin

Yes anon I've seen a few posts like that on FB too!

Also, I was earwigging in work today and heard a colleague talking to a customer about a situation that is affecting the entire staff and she went on about how everyone was so concerned about her and how everyone's first thought was her. My face, had anyone seen me, would have turned milk Grin

My friend sunbathes on his roof and he lives in Essex so YANBU

I also hate "whens". Someone posted the other day something like....

That moment when you go and get your drink and you realise you drank it so you go and make another one and then realise your actual drink was in a different room

...it was so mundane and boring and went on forever and ever and actually I think it's still going on now Grin

It is loafer! I have a cousin who is a regular offender with that one.

I read it and got to the end and was like WHAT ABOUT IT!!!! It's like someone telling a shit joke then walking off before revealing the punchline.

I recommend using the unfollow feature Wink

I agree. I have lived in five countries and in all of them heard expats say "only in ....." so many times. However the thing they are talking about has happened to me in at least one other country.

Oh, this drives me up the wall, OP!

It's like people who say "only in our crazy family..." when it's something totally mundane! looks sideways at in laws

Another one that grinds my gears is when someone does something stupid and posts "No, YOU did xyz"
