What exactly is the thought process behind men doing this? What is it meant to achieve? Hmm

Do you know the person? They are probably saying "well done" as encouragement or might think they know you.

Unless you're running in front of their car they're fuckwits and should be roundly ignored. Unless they are actually friends. I've ignored honkers before then found out that they knew me and were just saying hello Blush

Honkers suck. I give them the finger.

That's horrible. I can't run anyway but it does answer the question as to 'why do people go to gyms'!

Gallavich · 14/05/2017 12:36

Because some men get a kick out of embarrassing women.

Coolio I would love to live in your world!

I think it's about embarrassing you and it is definitely not a compliment/encouragement
It's not okay and I don't understand what goes through their tiny little minds.

Oh Coolio, how sweetly naive.

I ignore. When they wind down the window and shout out lewd comments - usually while one it waiting to cross a road, a level crossing, or otherwise 'trapped' or vulnerable - then ignore some more, as they can become verbally aggressive.

Why do some men cat call from building sites? (Again, safe, distant, hard to identify)? Same behaviour.

Really annoys me - thankfully now that I'm older I attract less attention, apart from the time a group of older school teen boys decided to shout "pink power ranger " repeatedly at me as I went by, which I actually then adopted as my work avatar.

It astounds me the way that some men - and it's always men - feel they have the right to shout out comments/honk their horn at female runners, when they're sitting their in car, probably not a fitness Adonis themselves. All I ever want is to go about my own business, doesn't seem like too much to ask.

I do think some men find it extraordinary and worthy of comment that women choose to exercise at all, especially in public. It's because they don't think of women as people but as functional, decorative objects, who exist only to service their needs and wants.

The strangest is when men comment on the fact that I'm not your typical runner - so I'm a bit curvy, well more than a bit these days, as though overweight women are particularly forbidden to show their bodies in public. Although running is the best way alongside diet to actually shift some poundage.

Weirdos. Probably couldn't even run for a bus.

This is one of the reasons I absolutely love parkrun. Runners of all shapes and sizes there and a tail runner so no one actually comes last. Volunteers tremendously support and cheer those of us to the rear more roundly than the front runners, and even the front runners often high five when I'm getting towards the finish and they've cooled down and are heading to their cars/bikes.

I have experienced people shouting encouragement - generally women or children. Nice men know better. It's never accompanied by honking, it's always from pedestrians - people on a level with me, not hidden or distant.

Hassled · 14/05/2017 12:59

lottie is absolutely right that nice men know better. If it's a man shouting, it's not going to be well-meaning encouragement.

"Pink Power Ranger" made me laugh. I wouldn't mind being called a Pink Power Ranger.

I've had "good for you" from older women a couple of times, friendly but I'd prefer they just said hello to be honest!

I'm trying to take up running again, but my area is very hilly and there are no pavements! So I've been driving to a different town where it's flat and running in the countryside. Found a nice area where I can run through the middle of a field (nice patch) and more importantly there are no cows or sheep. Then It goes onto a tiny country lane with no traffic, then through a small wood and back to the field.
The whole circuit is about 5K which is perfect!
I don't like people seeing me run.

ShoesHaveSouls · 14/05/2017 13:07

It's not encouragement - It's saying 'hey female, you're out and about - look at ME, I'm a man and leering at you because I can.'

I hate it.

I don't run where there's traffic at all now - I take the dog with me to the woods, or through the fields behind my house. The honking/shouting out of car windows just makes me Angry

This puts me off running in public. I'm not a great runner so would love to be invisible, people beeping or honking is the nail in the running coffin for me.

I'd take it as that whether that's the way it was meant it or not.

The alternative is to waste headspace getting pissed off and working out the whys and wherefores of some idiot's brain. Sounds like you've got better things to do with your time.

Happy running! Grin

I don't go out running anymore. I joined a gym after I was barked at by a group of men. I was sick of always getting a comment or a honk so I no longer run. Shame!

lottiegarbanzo · 14/05/2017 13:13

I always think (apart from fuck off) 'yeah? I bet you can't even run a mile, never mind five'. Or 'show me your 10k PB and I'll show you mine'.

Dicks who probably couldn't run to save their lives.

I know how you feel though. I don't like being leered at either and just yesterday enlisted DB to come running with me as I feel more confident with a buddy.
