The size of the Ninky Nonk

So I get that IN The Night Garden is just the delusional dreams of Iggle Pigglr whilst he dies of exposure and dehydration on his boat

BUT

one minute it's small enough to run up branches then its big enough for Iggle to get into the smallest bit at the back. When Iggle and Upsey are in the woods the trees look normal size so it can't be that its a huge train and the trees are even larger.

It plays with me head

The toddler doesn't care

It's best not to think about it. Have a glass of wine.

It's the same with the Tombliboos' house. Fairly small from the outside but massive on the inside.

I have similar questions about ITNG. I think the writers are on the same stuff that those who wrote The Magic Roundabout were on in the 70's. I love both programmes...

Is wiggle piggle dying in that boat?! Shock

So glad I don't have to watch that shit anymore Grin

Although I do kinda miss makka pakka the stoner Smile

I'm wondering if the pontypines are on benefits.

And why is it "Oh no! It's the Ninky Nonk!"? when they use it like public transport? We don't say "Oh no! It's the bus/train!" What's is this teaching kids?

My child is 10. Why do I still care?

Why in this massive garden do the tiny people live in a Semi?

Why if the Pinky Ponk can turn in its own length does it have the ponk alarm starting ages before it bumps into a tree...

Bridge scale is also wrong - Makka Pakka barely fits but the pinky ponk can fly under.

DD has a playset - I just have to see the characters to hear the bloody music - she loves them and the series so much (and it's 30 minutes so I can have a good run at something useful.

And why is it "Oh no! It's the Ninky Nonk!"?

The ninky nonk is trouble. All kinds of crazy s**t goes on in there. It breaks the laws of physics for a start.

My dd absolutely loves ITNG... I often wonder about the size of macca pacca he looks large next to his stones then tiny next to daisy etc it just makes no sense!!

I think you have to be on drugs for that programme to make sense and much like bastardgodarkly I'm thrilled to not have to watch that crap anymore.

The PinkyPonk is a floating gin palace.

All I can say is try watching it when you've had a few too many painkillers and have a very high fever.
Its the only time its ever made sense to me.
Can't remember the sense, but I do remember the haa hoos became Dr who villains.
Perhaps you're only meant to watch it when off your head.

Think the writers must have been on stuff - probably similar stuff to most of the kids' authors like Julia Donaldson!

My BIL is bothered that the pinky ponk's propellers run the wrong way.

Ninky nonk is definitely "Oh No" - I'd think "Oh No" if the bus or train ran upside down!

Oh I miss ITNG - Derek Jacobi's beautiful voice saying "isn't that a pip!" in the oddest tone.

Sadly one of my DTs is terrified of it so we don't watch it any more. He's dead right really, lots of weird shit goes down in that garden.

I miss Makka Pakka and his stones. Why was he so different in size to Upsey Daisy and Iggle P?

The worst thing are the birds and their weird, computer generated sounds. Why?

And am I the only one slightly disturbed by all the squelchy kissing and smooching between Iggle Piggle and Upsydaisy?

Oh I miss the little song at the start; DS2 used to hold out his hand every night at bedtime while I said "Round and round a little boat no bigger than your hand, out on the ocean far away from land. Take the little sail down, light the little light. This is the way to the garden in the night".

I loved those teeny tiny red and blue folk, the wottingers and pontipines? Pure brilliance, I used to send my sister photos of them as she has 57 thousand children also and loses them occasionally.

I thought Iggle Piggle was the little boy dreaming hence he has no bed to sleep in at the end! It is surprising that social services haven't been round to the Pontipines yet as they lose he children all the time. My DB also thinks there are racist undertones with the Wattangers who are rarely seen. My DD is obsessed so I have to watch this a lot and I agree with most, the writers must be on some sort of drugs nothing is ever to any consistent scale.

Surely "oh no it's the Nicky Nonk" is exactly the sort of over the top, frankly melodramatic reaction toddlers have to even inane things. "Oh no my socks on the floor" then hysterical laughter...

NotTheMrMenAgain · 10/05/2017 22:25

When DD was small she went through an intensive period of ITNG-obsession. FIL, a generally placid type, became irritated whenever the ninky-nonk came on screen. He'd shake his head and mutter "what is it supposed to be" and complain about the scale / size issues. It really annoyed him.
I didn't give a hoot since it kept DC happy for a blissful half hour.

I quite like the weird bird song. I think the ha-hoos are adults, macca pakka is a baby/young toddler, Tombleboose are toddlers and Iggle piggle and Upsy daisy little boy and girl hence the differences in sizes.

ITNG can take you perilously close to the edge when you're surviving on 2 hours of broken sleep at night. I'm pretty sure MI5 could use it to interrogate criminal masterminds.

Although in our house we've since graduated to SpongeBob and that makes ITNG look like the Theory of Relativity..

The worst thing are the birds and their weird, computer generated sounds.

DD loved ITNG except for the toucan bird that made the deep sound. She would run and hide whenever he showed up.

She's 9 now, I should make her watch it again and see if the effect is the same.

The most infuriating are the wattengers pretending they're out when the pontipines knock on the door to ask them out for a picnic. Then they just spend the whole episode waving at each other. I need to get out more

Always hated that bit too. Why not just "Oh! It's the ..."
(my child is 8)
