To want to bang my head against a wall. Why don't people understand they're voting for a party, not a person?!?!

AAAGGGHHHHHH!!! I really could scream, I'm so sick of people saying they can't bring themselves to vote Labour because they don't like Jeremy Corbyn. Oh ok, so condemn us to 5 more years of Tory hell instead because you don't like 1 bloke you've never met Angry
It's the PARTY that would be running the country, not one man and god knows what will happen in the future, the leader of the party can change!
Sorry, it just infuriates me that people can't see the bigger picture Blush

Well technically you are voting for a person, only those in Corbyn's Islington North constituency are actually voting for him.

I am aware you vote for a party. The main issue is that the party is a total shambles right now under his leadership.

This is the worst GE in my memory. I refuse to vote Tory but Labour are a total mess right now. There is no credible Opposition at a time we desperately need it.

You wouldn't burn your house down because you don't like the curtains. It infuriates me too, but I've realised that there's no changing some people's minds. Sadly, I think it will take years of Tory hell for people to wake up and realise what they are doing. It will be too late for the NHS by then, and for schools, and definitely for the poor and vulnerable in society.

And we can hope, campaign, appeal to the non voters, and the undecided. June always means the end of May after all. It's not a sure thing. My hope is the massive amount of young people who have registered to vote will make the right choice.

Because you do vote for a person. How far they comply with the party whip is up to them but, you do vote for a candidate.
The problem for the left is there candidates are going to be associated with Corbyn, Abbott & McDonnell etc.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 09/05/2017 07:41

The problem is they set the tone and provide (you hope) leadership.
I couldn't vote conservative because of Theresa May. Grammar schools are her hobby horse, for instance, which largely most Tory MPs, as far as I can see don't agree with.

YANBU, however it's naive to think you can completely disassociate a party from its leadership.

Both. Growing up my local mp was good. Not a party id vote for but he was good for the town. I voted for him as he lived in the town and got things sorted. Think everyone though the same as he had huge lead. He later decided to move onto something else and the seat went the other way very quickly!

Many people for well over a year have said they will not vote labour with Corbyn in control. This is what was always going to happen. The MPs are mostly divided from their leader and also sets the tone.

Because we vote for candidates and not parties, and just to make a point, the Prime Minister is an appointed not elected position, if my candidate chooses to cross the floor or become independent her remains my MP. Regardless of which party he then chooses to ally himself with.

Until Labour bin that terrorist sympathiser and get back on track, no one will vote for them. He is 'the face' of the party. Him and the Abbott woman, and the Thornberry , not to mention McConnell and Watson (Where is Watson? the brains of the party but oh so quiet) . Even the local parties don't want him.

Theresa May will be the best elected PM this country has seen in a long time.

Under Corbyn you'd be rewarded for not working.
He'd get rid of trident at a time we really need it.
He can't explain how he could sort the NHS, without lying about figures.

Vote Tory and save the angst over Corbyn.

mrsw14 · 09/05/2017 07:46

Why is the party a shambles though?? Because the right wing media says it is?? I don't see it, maybe not all Labour members agree with/like Corbyn, but the majority do. I had my local Labour MP on my doorstep recently so asked why the party don't like Corbyn, he genuinely spent 10 minutes talking passionately about what Corbyn has to offer. No evidence of shambles, just frustration that people would rather vote for a Tory government

The prime minister selects their own cabinet - he's more concerned with diversity than people who can do the job. I don't like Corbyn, I don't like his "selection" criteria for constituency MPs, I don't like the people he will appoint as his cabinet and undersecretaries etc... all the people who WILL run the country... so WHY exactly should I vote for Labour.

I dunno....

Corbyn doesn't come across as particularly competent or effective. He's not in control of his party. I believe he barely speaks to those outside his immidiate circle (No-one knew he was going to run with the bank holiday thing for example. The official labour party line was going to be about jobs. A better focus in my opinion)

He's just one guy and he's not a bad guy.
But its not indicative of a party on top of its game is it?

I see, a lot of labour party activists are asking me to put aside any concerns about Corbyn as a person and vote for the policies. But competance and unity are not illegitimate considerations. Or minor ones....

I shall be sticking with the SNP

Because Corbyn is destroying the party.
Because he is incompetent to lead this country as Prime Minister.
Because his political views do not represent mine and he is leading the party on a direction I refuse to follow.
Because the party have been so weakened, divided and made a laughing stock under him, so much so that the party is not one I can vote for.
Because when you vote Labour, you vote Corbyn as PM and this brings with it Diane Abbott who will have a leading role in any government of his.

One can vote for the party, but one also has to appreciate what that brings with it as a consequence.

No idea who I'm voting for yet. Tactically in my area it's Lib Dem to oust the Tory MP, but they are still abysmal.

What the Conservatives get right (and I don't like them) is they conduct their squabbles in private and they tend to have charismatic strong leaders.
Labour are doing what they did in their wilderness years; arguing in public and whatever you say about Corbyn he is not charismatic.
The argument is, thst if the party itself was stronger and more cohesive, Corbyn would no longer be in charge. It might be unfair, he might have been spun by the press, but a stronger leader and a stronger party would have done a Sydney Carton....'its a far far better thing etc.....'

Would you also argue that Donald Trump or Theresa May have no / little impact on the direction of their parties? Of course the leader is important!

Have you seen the Tories promo material? It's all "Team May" and she is constantly going on about "vote for me". Can't blame people for thinking they are voting for a person with that going on.

Unfortunately or not whatever your political views quite a lot of us wouldn't trust Corbyn to run a tea party let alone a country going through Brexit negotiators
As for the Labour Party they seem to have quite a few disagreements about backing Corbyn as well Sure they would rather be rid of him But as recent reports he does not intend to step down whatever the results of the election

Look i know very little about the in's and out's of politics OP, but have an opinion strong enough to make me go and vote, so i'm probably the sort of person who frustrates you.

My take on it is simply this: I would struggle to vote for a party who had managed to end up with JC at the helm.

Yes, you're voting for a whole party - and what does that say about them when they've presented a weak front man?

Mind you....If we're talking about Shambles...Theresa May is a hot mess as well.

Fucking off all the leaders of Europe...Leading us into a disasterous isolation (tbf she wouldn't have chosen to do this but my god is she running with it now)

Election "campaigns" which involve hiding in rural Scotland and only talking to hand picked audiences

She should be a laughing stock as well by rights. No idea how she is getting away with it...

By the way I don't think TM is charismatic or strong. The fact that she needs to tell us she is illustrated the point somewhat.
If she said dictatorial and deranged....

I don't see Theresa May paying much heed to her party (unless it is actually UKIP). Her refusal to consider removing students from immigration figures, despite the pleas of her party and cabinet colleagues is just one of many examples of this. If I vote Tory, I have to do so under the assumption that my MP will have virtually no voice in parliament.

Report
mrsw14 · 09/05/2017 07:52

I disagree that he's weak. I think people are believing what they read, which is biased against him. I think a Labour leader who is not everyone's cup of tea is still better than a Tory government and a lying Theresa May
