AIBU?

To feel uncomfortable about the Nazi symbols on ds's shirt and arm? (Y11 shirt-signing day)

Y11s were signing each other's schools shirts today, the last day before Study Leave begins.

There's the expected complement of hearts and cocks-and-balls on ds's shirt. (Surprisingly little swearing.) Also many Stars of David - which I have no issue about, we're Jewish.

But I feel uncomfortable about the many swastikas and the number inked onto his left forearm.

Ds says that he wasn't picked out for the swastikas. Some boys were signing there name with one on everybody's shirt. TBH I don't know whether to believe him.

The swastikas are pure bad taste IMO. But the number on ds's forearm really bugs me.

I don't know what, if anything, to do about it.

I'm shocked, that's awful.
You would think all the holocaust and Hitler they get at school would educate them out of thinking this is a joke.
I would tell the school, without mentioning any names. Something needs to change in the way they teach history.

I'm not Jewish op, I'm not homosexual, a traveller, a communist or any other religion but this would really bother me. They are obviously doing it for the shock laughs but its not on at all.

Was the number on his forearm supposed to be a reference to an Auschwitz inmate id number?

That's awful.

Tell the school: show them the shirt.

They need to deal with this.

I would be furious! How disgusting, report to the school.

Jeez...how did teachers allow that to happen?

How do people raise such awful children?

Gross

Seriously? If my (Jewish) kids came home with numbers on their arm.... wow. I'd be straight down the school and I'd expect them to educate the pupils on the holocaust. Actually, id offered to do it for them, as a grandchild of survivors.

I think I would take photos and send to school and call them smartish. That is completely and utterly unacceptable and needs to be dealt with.

Personally I'd be contacting the school in a "just to make you aware" way.

It sounds as if the pupils could do with some additional history lessons to say the very least.

I bet the boys will say 'signed it with a Hindu symbol miss, RU predjudissed ?'

They need jumping on. Hard. Difference between free speech and hate speech and just being a tosser.

Also sorry op that must have been shocking.

Just wrong on so many levels I am staggered that this shit is still going on. I am surprised the teachers let this go it is so far from acceptable.

Id also be extremely ashamed and devastated if my year 11 child daubed swastikas on a fellow student, and to write a number on the forearm of a Jewish student- id march her into school myself.

OP, is this a state school? I ask because I am shocked that they have started exam leave so early!! Having been a secondary teacher for 15 years, it's been years since it's been this early. Most schools I know, exam leave is after half term at least.

And I absolutely think you need to tell the school about the swastikas. That's appalling and definitely needs bringing to their attention.

Please op tell the school to deal with this. Please don't allow these children to enter the real world thinking this is ok, even in jest. No.

Report it to the school. I'm sure the lads consider this banter of the highest orderConfused but it's not on and they need educating.

You must tell the school. They have a procedure for dealing with racist incidents. This is beyond bad.

Ditto User. It's weeks until the first exam!
But, I'd be taking photos, and emailing them to head. It's unbelievably offensive and close to hate speech.

Report it to the school. The swastikas are bad enough, but the number is deeply offensive and worrying.

And I half expected to be offfered a grip!

State school and ds's first GCSE is next week.

I haven't photographed ds's arm. I think he'd be beyond furious if I took this to the school, but I think I have to. It worries me that these 16yos lack a sense of how far is too far.

My ds came home with the word cunt on his shirt along with swastikas and penis drawings. Delightful.
I've just ignored it tbh.

Tbh would this not be classed as some sort of hate crime?

I think I would consider reporting it.

I'd be raising it with the head of year. Awful, really awful.
