Tear up Magna Carta Charles!

Inspired by the new series on BBC2 where 'Charles' goes full King John on Parliament, I was thinking I would prefer the royal family to make law and policy autonomously as they have no ambition and are already privileged. I know it sounds crazy but I feel most politicians are self serving and greasy ladder climbing using their time as an MP as a steppingstone to more profitable things (George Osborne - I'm looking at you) whereas the royals have a more filial responsibility. Just a thought - what do you think?

I think you're ideas are beyond batshit crazy... I've heard some bizarre stuff but never that we should become an absolute monarchy when Charles become king.

Seriously, you want him to make all our laws without any accountability or redress, and turn back time 800 years to King John? Sorry, you're nuts!

Just thought it was an interesting idea! There seems to be no social responsibility in modern politicians, they work on a short term, 4 year cycle lurching from election to election. They only do what will get them short term votes - would a longer term leader not be a more stable option?

The queen's uncle was a teensy bit of a nazi. I know that's all the rage now and everything but at least in France they're getting a chance to vote for their nazi before letting em make the laws.......

They're nice as a tourist attraction & use their privilege to the nations benefit but an unelected figure head pass laws? Sounds preposterous

though of course, substitute the Pope for the EU and King John is an interesting choice - all constrained by Europe.

Woa! It's not going to happen! calm down all! Everyone is unhappy with current government mainly because they are so self serving and short sighted - ok, no absolute monarchy. What other alternatives do people suggest? It's ok, there's not going to be a legally binding countrywide vote on it or anything Grin.

Sweet Jesus, that's the worst idea I've heard in some time Shock.

You have a point about career politicians, but absolute monarchy is a batshit response to that.

Charles is a man who needs a valet to squeeze toothpaste for him. I'm not putting him in charge of lawmaking.

Dictators are a real and present danger. Just when a country thinks they are too civilised for one is when they tend to float to the top like scum in a cooking pot.

Ever heard of that famous Winston Churchill quote 'democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others' ?

Well, we could let the people decide who they want to represent them in free and fair elections.... such as what we're about to have in a month!

We are being ruled by tyrants but looking to the Royals to step in (for us commoners) will be out of the frying pan into the fire.

Isn't an un elected long term leader a dictator? Hard to get shot of when they go power crazy. They could dictate we all have to wear a waste paper bin on our heads on a Wednesday with one arm tied behind our backs.

Who's going to enforce any unpopular decisions? The french ended up chopping the heads of theirs to get rid.

I believe the Tories are tyrants because, inter alia, some 20 MPs conducted fraud to get elected.

Well, the Queen or indeed Charles, when he gets his turn, could dissolve Parliament, it is always an option theoretically speaking.

It will never happen though, there would be absolute uproar in the streets if we reverted back to having an absolute monarchy after hundreds and hundreds of years of not having one.

After the amount of people who have laid down their lives to get away from the system you describe, YABVVVU.

For a while I've thought that they system of a 4 year cycle isn't very good because nothing really long term gets done if it will mean short term pain because the opposition will campaign that they won't do it so no short term pain or they'll just undo it.

But then I remember we could get stuck with a very bad person in charge.

Of all members of the Royal family, you've picked Prince Charles who has the most history of lobbying government for policies which work in his financial interest.
