He raped a 5 year old for fucks sake, I'll never understand the sentencing for sex crimes, that girl's life is ruined, and do they really think he won't reoffend?

I disagree. Not life. Execution without trial.

Well the judge clearly disagreed.

I can't understand why he didn't even get the max sentence. I just feel sex crime is treated so flippantly by the courts here. It's so depressing and frustrating.

Offenders like this need a life sentence in solitary with the basic of human needs supplied.

Ridiculous response. The day we start punishing criminal offences without bothering with trials is the day we start descending into totalitarianism.

Why? Even when we had capital punishment rape was not a capital offence.

Sentencing defies logic so often. Tonight's news reported a groom being convicted of raping a woman just before his wedding. He did get life with a minimum tariff of NINE years! How is that life

Well the judge clearly disagreed.

Not likely. There are sentencing guidelines that have to be followed, otherwise he'd be more likely to be successful on appeal.

Sentencing for child abuse beggars belief. People get more for fraud.

Rape was a capital crime under an Act of 1828.

Felix, minor theft was a capital crime at one point. Does that mean that, if capital punishment were restored, it should be available for theft?

Yanbu

13 yrs isn't even enough to "pay" for the poor child having to relive things and tell her story let alone for the crime itself.

So often I read headlines or threads on MN and crimes where no one was even hurt seem to get heavier sentences than things like this.

So unfair

Flowers for the poor chikd and family:(

Burn it off in acid. That's what I say.
Disgusting beast. No time enough long enough in prison for dispicable perverts, but 13 years, and My arse he'll actually do 13 years. He'll probably get time knocked off for 'good behavior'.

Despicable as the crime is, and it certainly is..13 years is actually quite a heavy sentence for such an offence.. there are many more paedos who get off with a lot less! Does that mean that this member of the judiciary is being extra judicious? Or is it a new trend? As far as the judiciary are concerned, I'd like to know how they get that privileged position, what are the requirements?

Child rapists should have permanent non chemical castration.

That is almost no sentence at all. He will be walking free pretty much all her adult life.

StayingClassy I agree with the sentiment, but solitary confinement sounds a little too easy.

Apparently child abusers aren't too popular inside- wouldn't it be a pity if his life was turned into a living hell?

All those complaining about the sentencing. Happy to pay more tax? Unfortunately that's what it comes down to. The govt aren't prepared to spend money on prisons. No point moaning about the Judges. Lobby your MP's

It's definitely not a matter of cost.

It is solely based on law.
