AIBU?

Guy who works in the petrol station

So there's a petrol station near me that I pop into most days. There a guy working in there, younger than me, maybe early to mid twenties. (Not much younger, I am late 20s). Everytime I see him he smiles and says 'hiya!' enthusiastically, and asks how I am as he obviously recognises me. A few weeks ago I bought a particular brand of fruit cider and he spent a couple of minutes giving me his opinion on it. On several occasions when I have had my DS with me he's been really friendly towards him, helping him pick out a magazine and sweets and doing impressions for him. Once my card declined for a packet of toilet roll and he told me not to worry, he had some change he needed to get rid of. He's quite good looking too.

AIBU to think he's interested?! Or is he just being nice? Blush

Sounds like he could well fancy you, I can see why you'd think that.

Ask him out and you'll find out.

Of course if he says no, you will have to buy a wig, grow facial hair, change your wardrobe and never make eye contact with him again..... or just laugh it off.

One or the other.

I can't just ask him out though, I'd die of shame! 'Yes £10 on pump number 10, and do you fancy a drink sometime?'

Well, better to say that than get all flustered and say "£10 on drink number 10, and do you fancy a pump sometime?" Grin

Is there another convenient local shop? If so, then feel free to ask him out - it is after all well into the 21st century.

OTOH if it's your only local shop and you're going to have to go in there regularly or keep running out of milk for your tea, then tread very carefully before you do anything that might embarrass you.

Do you fancy him?

Oh my god Pentapus Grin

I think I'm being ridiculous anyway. He acts like this even when I've just finished work and have makeup rolling down my face and generally look a mess. He's clearly just a friendly individual. I will save myself the embarrassment!

I'd die of shame too. Rubbish at that sort of thing.

Maybe casually mention that you're off on a date that night or something and see what his reaction is?

Or pretend ds has lost a toy or something and the last place you remember seeing him with it was there, so can you leave your number with him in case it turns up?

I'm a bit crap at this too. Can you tell?

Sounds like he is interested or is a really nice guy so if he isn't he wouldn't react badly if you asked and he didn't want to. I think I'd be making friendly enquiries e.g. are you off out after work or do you ever go to [local pub], what do you reckon to it? Easy openers to suggesting a drink etc

Mistletoe yes, dear god yes. He's not conventionally handsome, but still has that cute and well groomed look about him.

Great idea Seren. I did promise myself I'd never go for guys in their 20s again though, due to many bad relationships when I was younger with immature guys.

He sounds interested! Why not go in and create an opening like buying a bottle of wine and saying you are having a night in as a friend let you down for "x" event, then jokingly say "unless someone steps in to the breach!?"

If no reaction then laugh it off as a passing comment.

If it's a Shell garage then - they're all trained to be really friendly and interested like this, sorry to dash your hopes!

What have you got to loose by asking him out? Life's short so might as well Go for it

The vast majority of people when asked out, if they are not interested will politely decline and asking someone out is nothing to die of shame from .

Mmm. Could you use something like saying how great he is with kids to ask if he has any of his own and then segue that into finding out if he's married/attached?

You need to loiter first - and see if he's as adorable with other customers

If you want to ask him out, then ask him out ...

Many retail workers won't pick up on hints/cues from customers (even if they want to or feel the same) because we are always trained to be polite and chatty to customers but also taught to keep it professional just in case we are misreading the signals.

The supermarket I work in has many regulars, and there's a few cute guys who always stop by the customer service desk for a chat and can be quite flirty and jokey, but I'd never take it to be genuine flirting unless one of them came straight out and said "Hey, want to come for a drink sometime?" nor would I ever take the number they left because "I lost X, give me a call if it shows up". If I had misread things then I can get into trouble for using a customer's information for personal use, which in my job is a disciplinary offence.

Personally I think, go there have an issue with the pump, then see if he helps, ten you "forget your card" or you're "car breaks down" and you have to wait for someone to help set up a deck chair and a secret camera by the kiosk and monitor how he is with you vs other customers when you're sitting right there staring at them a metre away in your deckchair stern faced, then when you go to the toilet or " check your cars ok" through the secret camera if his attitude changes of course the camera has to be about only a ft or two high on a tripod so you can see him properly and so it's small enough to be well hidden so he doesn't know you are spying and then ask him out when you're sure Grin
